Great adjunct to help you understand basic concepts

If you need help, like I did, understanding basic concepts relating to test scores,and how descriptive and inferential statistics and their meanings apply to education, I would highly recommend purchasing this book. Although I wish the price for this paperback was a bit less, it's worth the money. I'm currently using a more technical book on the subject for one of my classes, and this book certainly helped clarify basic principles and applications due to the simple manner in which the author examines and explains the ideas.

Helpful, but obsolete

This book is a helpful resource for non-experts to understand test scores and basic test theory. Lyman helpfully explains topics like reliability, validity, percentile scores, normal curve equivalent scores, and many others. "Test Scores and What They Mean" provides a useful foundation for teachers, parents, counselors, and many other nonexperts so that they can correctly interpret a wide variety of test scores.

But Lyman's book is outdated in many respects. First, the book was published in 1997--five years before the No Child Left Behind Act became law. Many terms (like "Adequate Yearly Progress") that are commonplace today are completely absent from the book. Also, portions of the book are clearly outdated--such as the conversation about validity--use terminology and interpretive frameworks that are 20 years or more out of date. Especially frustrating is Lyman's tendency to describe a type of score and then say, "This type of score is obsolete," or "This practice is outdated and today rarely seen."

There are few books available to help the non-expert understand standardized test scores. An outdated book is better than no book at all. But I wish Lyman would update his book to reflect 21st century practices.

Great landmark source on test scores. It does seem a little time locked, but there is no current book quite like it. If you want help on standards-based assessment scores, Lyman can tell you some things, but you won't get all the help you need. Still, it's worth having.

The text of this book appears to be outstanding. Regarding the Kindle edition, however, the diagrams are not sufficiently high enough in definition to justify the price for the Kindle edition. If this were corrected, I would buy the Kindle version and recommend it highly to those who work with analgesics professionally.

Everything you need to know for repair and maintenance. I bought this book so my nephew, Ben Slough, (injured while serving in Iraq, God bless his soul) had a reference to repair a Suzuki GT 185 for my wife. Everything he needed to know was in this manual. Happy wife, happy man :)
