About the Author
James became interested in sports betting at a very early age when his father would call out to him for random numbers with which to fill out his football pools coupon.

That led James to an interest in statistics, probability theory and eventually a degree in computer science. From there he went into research and his EDDIE project became the genesis of The Centre for Computational Finance and Economic Agents at the University of Essex.

After leaving academia for The City, working at Reuters on finance related research projects, James is now a freelance consultant, quant developer and writer on sports betting markets. James sometimes blogs on www.betfairprotrader.co.uk

Solid and well done handcraft

The author has obviously built a bot for himself. I would have preferred Java, C# or C++ rather than in Visual Basic but in this case the Visual Basic programmers would have been unhappy. Butler assumes that all the readers are newcomers to programming. He explains step by step how to build a full blown bot for trading horse races. The explanation is not restricted to the API but also how to design a Visual Basic windows form. This is great for a beginner but not so interesting for a programmer in another language. The text is not riddled with the usual blah blah of many current programming books. Instead the author is always to the point. It should be straightforward to transform most of the code into another programming language.

One gets the impression that the author knows what he is talking about. He also has the necessary writing skills to explain the concepts in an easy to comprehend way.
The book is not perfect but is well put together and in times where a lot of sloppy books are published this is something to appreciate.

newbies to coding would be better off to learn the basics of Visual basic

The seminal work on Betfair programming. Although a person with no programming experience can implement the program in the book, newbies to coding would be better off to learn the basics of Visual basic .net before starting on the book. The book details how to connect to the Betfair APi, how to write the json response and request classes needed to interact with the API and how to place, cancel and update bets using your bot. The book is well written and easy to understand and I have built a functioning application that allows me to automate strategies I previously had to do manually. I cannot recommend this book strongly enough, that will remain the best purchase I have ever made on Amazon until I buy his next book.

A useful handbook for teaching values to students

In this book , Simon et al offer over 70 different activities and written exercises designed to help people learn about values and explore their own values. Although it is ostensibly targeted to school-teachers, the strategies are useful for all ages. One very interesting aspect is that the book refrains from endorsing any particular values. Instead, the concept they have is that we need to treat students more as autonomous valuing beings that already have a fairly well defined system of values. A student's problem is not that he has no ideas about what is good/bad right/wrong. Rather he does know these things but is usually confused about his own beliefs. The activities are thought provoking and diverse.

This is my favorite for teaching young people on any topic from mathematics to relationships. What teachers want to teach is not just mathematics, but how to think - to analyze information, take it apart and put it back in a form that they can use it. This applies to all the advice they get from parents, teachers, coaches, and friends. How do they think for themselves, decide for themselves, and stay true to themselves and their values?

Great activities from a Great teacher

I studied under Dr. Simon. I know what a great teacher he is. I bought a used copy, and it is not in good shape. I wish I had bought new. In fact, I will.
I teach a religious class of 6th graders and needed this book to remind me of exciting activities related to one's own values. Dr. Simon is a master of motivation.and helping others make clear that which they value most.

Rebecca S. Hauder, a Registered Nurse, Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, and Marriage and Family Therapist, worked twelve years in the hospice setting. There she witnessed and experienced firsthand the rewards and struggles of providing care to the elderly, sick, and dying. I heard it again today. A friend said, if we don't get some help for mom and her caregiving for dad, we will end up losing both of them.
Caregiving is not for the faint of heart. In the midst of caregiving, a person can lose perspective, question his/her sanity, become angry, become exhausted, become ill, and much more. This little book of thoughts and photos is for the caregiver - only a few paragraphs a day - as a reminder that others have trod this path. With these suggestions, walking the journey becomes a little easier.

I work with advocates for victims of sexual assault. While their role is to protect the rights of the survivor, they are also often the first person to provide care during a time of extreme trauma. Rebecca’s book contains many carefully thought out ideas supported by her wonderfully appropriate photos that can help an advocate waive off “burn-out” by finding, in the author’s own words, “profound significance and meaning” in the work they do. A Rollicking Recounting of a World Gone Mad

This is a book for people who believe books about entertainment should be entertaining. It is not for those intent on calculating (to the second decimal) what percentage of a given Beatles' song was written by Paul, and how much by John, a scholastic debate that seems to be in vogue currently. Ivor Davis 'extensively researched account of the Beatles first US tour (and he was there), while chock full of interesting information, is much more an account of Beatlemania than a treatise on Beatle-ism. It not only tells you a lot about the Beatles, it takes you back to that initial era of maximum excitement, letting the reader try to figure out what all the shrieking was about - and maybe even relive a little of it.
Davis uses the story of the opening tour that took the Beatles from the Cow Palace in San Francisco to the Paramount Theater in New York - with big loops in between through Canada and down to New Orleans and Jacksonville - as a matrix to tell pretty much the whole story of the Beatles. For instance, Beatles manager Brian Epstein's dependence on prescription drugs, his sensitivity about his homosexuality, and his ambivalence about his Jewishness are all in evidence in episodes from the tour, and these are depicted well by Davis in his straight ahead, take-no-prisoners, call 'em as you saw 'em journalistic style. Epstein, for instance, asked Davis to arrange a ticket for him to Yom Kippur services in New Orleans. Davis did so, but then Epstein failed to show. Then Davis, in the book, delves deeply into his own library of over 300 books on the Beatles plus other sources, to fill in the rest of the story of Epstein's downward spiral to suicide.
Not that there's any shortage of interesting little factoids from the Beatles early days in the US. This reader, for instance, didn't know Ed Sullivan had never heard the Beatles sing before they performed on his show. (He had however, heard the shrieking of a mob of teenage girls who were welcoming the Beatles at Heathrow Airport, and that was apparently good enough for him.) Nor did I know (though many more serious fans probably do) that Capitol Records didn't even release the first Beatles record it had the rights to because an executive didn't think the Beatles had what it took to sell records in America. Indeed, one of the interesting aspects of the book is the fact that no one at the time really understood that the Beatles were to become legends in their own time. John Lennon thought their period of popularity might last four years. Ringo Starr was planning to open a hair dressing shop when fame faded. Davis, then a brash young ex-pat British journalist in his mid-20s who had more or less talked his way into a job as the bureau chief of the London Daily Express' (one-man) "West Coast Bureau," admits he had no idea what lay ahead for the Beatles. (Davis himself has an interesting story to tell in the epilogue. He left his job as a PR guy for a chain of lower-priced vacation resorts in England - having decided to become a Hollywood reporter - and arrived in the US with a suitcase and $100. He knew very little about the Beatles when he was assigned to join their entourage as a permanent traveling member.)
Sorting out what the Beatles' appeal was (and remains) is as challenging for Davis as it has been down through the years to other chroniclers. To many back then it just seemed like refried American rock `n' roll. However, Davis makes it very clear that it was NOT the music they played in the stadiums and arenas on the tour that set the world afire -- because no one could hear it. Not only was the shrieking of the teenage virgins earsplitting from start to finish - drowning out most of the music - but the sound systems in the venues were uniformly horrid, something the Beatles constantly complained about. They couldn't even hear themselves. Ringo Starr, on at least one occasion, had to lip read the singers to figure out which song they were playing.
He really should have known. The Beatles played the same 12-song, 27-minute set at every concert, always concluding with �Long, Tall Sally," at which point Davis and the other members of the traveling party would leave their front row seats, slog through the gooey detritus of melting jelly beans flung by the bushel at the musicians during the concert, in an effort to get out ahead of the stampede. The Beatles themselves often made their escape in an ambulance, siren shrieking, lights flashing. One of the Beatles finally puts the beam of an insight on all that is happening: The fans didn't come to hear them sing; they came just to see them. It was more of a pilgrimage than a cultural experience. Its meaning more than snappy melodies or catchy lyrics. A joyous release, perhaps, from the tragedy of the contemporaneous Kennedy assassination.
Davis also displays a real gift as an anecdotist. One of my favorites is an exchange between an actor and Zsa Zsa Gabor at a Hollywood celebrity party. The actor asked Zsa Zsa if the Beatles were going to sing. �Do they sing?" Zsa Zsa asked, her grip on events on popular culture apparently slipping badly. And Davis doesn't skimp on the sex and drugs and booze, and believes he has added some clarification to previous accounts of how Bob Dylan introduced the Britishers to marijuana (subsequently a staple of their medication diet). But he doesn't dwell on the seamier episodes. For example, he tells about the mother who was paid $10,000 to keep her mouth shut about the (consensual, not to say eager) attendance of her daughters at a party in the Beatles Las Vegas suite, but doesn't get into what exactly the sisters were up to at the party. He alludes to the goings-on indirectly, in more well told anecdotes. On one memorable "morning after," for instance, Davis asked Ringo why he looked so melancholy and glum. The drummer, grimacing visibly, explained in clear, earthy language that it's because of the acute soreness of his sexual member.
All in all, "The Beatles and Me On Tour" is a rollicking recounting of a world gone mad - all except for a small island of intermittent quasi-sanity that existed from time to time on the floor of hotels occupied by the Beatles and their traveling party -- including Ivor Davis.

The Beatles and Me

If you love The Beatles, the Sixties, and great writing, this new book is a must read! Seriously, you feel like a fly on the wall, as if you were there back in 1964. If you're unfamiliar with Ivor Davis -- he hung out, traveled with and got to know The Beatles in 1964. If you're unfamiliar with Ivor, he was a foreign correspondent, a New York Times columnist, editor at large for LA Magazine and more, and he's covered everything from Civil Rights in Mississippi, the Robert Kennedy assassination, Angela Davis and Daniel Ellsburg to the Sharon Tate murders, Patty Hearst and even the World Soccer Cups. Enjoy the read, I know you will. And when you're done, you'll want to read his other books, too. I promise.

Great summer read about one summer 50 years ago.

I lived this too, but on a much lower level as the Yeah Beatles Fan Club President from San Diego. Ivor captures what life was like inside the tornado that was The Beatles that summer. Well written, interesting insights to each Beatle. If you were young in 1964, the Beatles were it and Ivor delivers the stories we all wanted to be part of back then.

Great summer read!

Bresnan does an amazing job at explaining the eastern religions and philosophies. I had to get this book for my class but I'm kind of glad I purchased it because I can see myself referencing back to it often.

Wonderful

I bought this book for an Asian Humanities class. This is a textbook, and the price is horrendous even for a used copy, which is truly a shame because the price alone makes this wonderful book so very inaccessible to the average reader. Patrick S. Bresnan is a talented writer as he beautifully introduces stories and concepts behind Hinduism and Asian Buddhist traditions. His prose style is interesting and very understandable, with a subtle touch of humor where warranted, and he makes complex ideas very easy to understand and absorb. From start to finish this is a thoughtful, enjoyable and enlightening read. I had intended to sell back this book at the end of the semester, but I love it so much I now plan to keep it for myself. I wish it were more affordable so readers interested in the subject would be more likely to buy it. An earlier edition exists for slightly less money, but I don't know how it might be different from this edition, it has fewer pages. This book is highly recommended and this is one of those books that everyone should read.

Great resource for Eastern Religion and Pholosophy!

This book was used as a textbook for the online course of Eastern Religion and Philosophy. It made the course enjoyable, and is one of the few textbooks that can stand alone as an excellent study of Eastern Religions, their histories, and the various philosophies. Well written and easy to read, it is deep in details and a great 'one resource guide' to have around. In fact, I have it as a kindle book for reference that's always with me. Two points on the Kindle version; first, it uses the standard page numbers as the printed version, and second, because the text is not realizable, it is only readable on an iPad or larger device. No iPhone capacity.
