A Really Well-Done Intro To Bakugan Season 2

I just started liking Bakugan sometime around last year...I started by watching the first season and bits and pieces of the second season. I loved every minute of it but my favorite past time isn't just watching Bakugan I also enjoy drawing it. This book gives you plenty of pictures and descriptions of all things Bakugan from the Characters, The Heroes and the Villians to the rules to play the game in real life with your own Bakugan. This book is a good addition to any fan of Bakugan and wants an in depth description of each character and Bakugan. From the look of how the Bakugan Ball is when it is open and standing to how it appears when it is closed. Its all in here even the description of some of the best Bakugan of Season 1 are in this book. I highly recommend this book to those who collect Bakugan and newcomers to the series.

A very likable retelling of a Greek classic for children

This is a classic Greek tale retold by a master story teller for children. The retelling is filled with subtle humor, but some of the language contains words that most young children will not know. Two things follow: This is an opportunity for parents and children to interact with parents defining the difficult words. Alternatively, this is not a book for very young children. But, the story should be known because it has become a part of world culture.
The story is about Perseus, who with his mother were placed in a basket and sent off in the river by evil people who wanted them dead. The two land on in an area where every inhabitant is bad except for the fisherman who found them and raised Perseus.
When Perseus grew, the king wanted him dead and wanted to mistreat his mother. The king persuaded Perseus to undertake a mission of bringing back to him the head of the monster Medusa, one of three Gogons who wore snakes instead of hair. The problem was that anyone who looked at a Gorgon would be turned to stone. Perseus undertook the mission, but had no idea how he could accomplish it.
He meets Quicksilver who helps him by introducing him to three gray women who shared a single eye, Quicksilver’s sister who was exceptionally wise, and three pretty women who gave him three objects that he could use to accomplish his mission.
Children will enjoy reading or hearing the adventure read to them and finding out what happens to the wicked king who sent him on this terrible journey and what happens to all the wicked people in his kingdom.

A very thorough, detailed, well researched biography. For quite sometime, I have wanted to know the details of this man's life, a man who changed our entertainment culture and impacted our society. I am glad I chose this book to enlighten me.
This book is not one that, "I could not put down", and in fact, did place it aside twice to "take a break" and read a light novelette. However, upon conclusion, just like with his Henry Ford biography, I realized what a comprehensive, and masterful job, Steven Watts had done.

Curious about Disney?

I was personally surprised by the ease in reading this book. I purchased it for a course on Disney and at first was slightly disgruntled by having to read this book. However, within the first few chapters I had found the reading to be quite interesting and inclusive of the good and bad of Walt and the Disney company. It includes his years growing up and pre-Disney, but focuses mainly on his years building the empire. If this is a purchase for a class, it may be beneficial to purchase used and write all over the thing. Overall, I actually found it to be a good textbook for an odd GE.

"It is as big and depthless as the sky itself. You can see the curve of the earth on its surface as it stretches away for miles to the far shore." So begins Old Glory, in which Jonathan Raban recounts his eye-opening descent of the Mississippi River in a 16-foot aluminum motorboat. As the English author explains, his obsession with the subject began with Huckleberry Finn, which he first read as a 7-year-old. And in fact, his opening sentences refer as much to the imaginary river as to the real one, which turns out to be less bucolic than Raban expected. Three miles upstream from Oquawka, Illinois, he's nearly pulverized by a towboat. Later on, the intrepid voyager only just manages to escape a treacherous whirlpool near St. Louis, calming himself afterwards with a generous dose of tobacco and Valium.

True, when Raban isn't cheating death he encounters some stunning terrain, which he describes in no-less-stunning prose. Yet Old Glory is much, much more than a travelogue. It is also a brilliant interrogation of the American psyche, in the tradition of De Tocqueville and Crevecoeur. And ultimately, Raban tells us a great deal about the very phenomenon of travel, with all its rigors and rewards, and its peculiar, metaphysical dislocations: "Riding the river, I had seen myself as a sincere traveler, thinking of my voyage not as a holiday but as a scale model of a life. Good but not Raban's Best

I read Bad Land, Raban's book on homesteaders in Montana several years ago and it has become one of my all time favorite books. Since that time I have read some of Raban's other books, this one included. Raban's subject is fascinating, his writing is first rate. However, like some of the other reviewers have noted, this book is marred by the author's cynical tone and approach and an air of condecension that preveals throughout this book. Raban continually gives the impression that in his brief stops along the river he "figures out" what the locals have been unable to or have failed to figure out for years. I am sure that Raban did encounter his share of rubes and rednecks, but if this book is to be believed, those types of people are practically the only ones he encountered (maybe this has something to do with the fact that he sought out bars and watering holes as his first contact with many of the places he visited). His take on the South is typical of someone who has never lived in it.
This is a very good book and worth reading. However, it would not be my first choice of books written by this author. This book is marred by an attitude of superiority and condecension that Raban appears to have lost in his later books.

Bringing the Mississippi River to life........

Old Glory tells the tale of Raban's solo journey by boat down the Mississippi from Minneapolis to New Orleans. Along the way, he visits the great cities and backwater towns that dot this legendary American wonder. Raban demonstrates that the Mississippi is, in myriad ways, much more than a river. He records the life-altering relationships between people and place and brings us the history and experience of this ultimate American artery. I have crossed the Mississippi by bridge and plane countless times and, with a cursory glance, acknowledged it as a major American marker. Raban, however, brings a soul to the Mississippi that, at once, uncovers a latent reverence, inspires a profound understanding, and rekindles a vicarious sense of spirit and adventure in the American citizen for "our" river and it's lore. This is an excellent book that deserves, and will certainly earn, your attention.

a tattered flag, still waving

I have traveled a fair amount through the small towns of the United States and have to concur with Mr. Raban's depiction of both the towns and the people who live in them. Other readers who have taken the time to write reviews of this book here seem to have remembered only about half of what Raban wrote about each of the towns that he visited.
His initial impressions were often filled with disappointment. He had approached this trip with a boyhood dream in his head and he was continually set back on his proverbial heels by the reality of these river towns in 1979. More often than not, however, further exploration of the town, conversations with some of its citizens and reflection on his part, caused Raban to revise his evaluation of many of the places that he visited.
Some reviewers may perhaps have forgotten that this book describes this region as it was after years during which the US economy struggled through an oil crisis, bouts of inflation, intervals of high unemployment and the tail end of the history of the "old economy". Should someone have the time and inclination to retrace Raban's steps nearly 25 years later, I would not be surprised if they found these towns and their people had changed quite a bit, probably for the better in social and economic terms. For instance, Raban devoted most of a chapter to the failed election campaign of Memphis's first black candidate for mayor. A quick Google (keywords: Memphis Tennesee government) will show you that the present mayor of Memphis (Willie W. Herenton) is African-American. I'm going to guess that he is not the first black mayor of Memphis.
I loved Raban's modus operandi for getting to the heart of a place. Tie up your boat, go to the nearest bar and strike up a conversation. This would seem to me to be the most reliable means to quickly get an unvarnished opinion about a place. Sure, someone on a bar stool is likely to have a slightly dimmer view of the place where he or she lives than the average citizen, but Raban was rarely, if ever, content with their views. He basically used the tavern-sitters as a 1979-era local flesh-and-blood Google; he found out the basics about a place like who are the local characters, what are the main industries, which are the burning local political issues etc. His fellow barflies were more important as sources of germane questions than as sources of definitive answers.
Raban's perspective on the St. Louis metropolitan area is one that I can vouch for personally, having visited there 10 years after he did. Furthermore Jonathan Franzen's novel The Twenty-seventh City is an elaborate description of the city-county socio-politico-economic tensions during the late 1980s. The continuum between Raban and Franzen's descriptions is pretty easy to imagine. Franzen grew up in the county and would have been a teen-ager when Raban was shacked up with his rich, wigged-out girlfriend out in Clayton.
I took one long journey through the US accompanied by a Danish friend. Upon learning that my traveling companion was a foreigner nearly every American that we encountered relaxed almost visibly and began to wax philosophical about the state of things. The radius of their sphere of interest varied, but everyone had an opinion about something. It was delightful to see that Mr. Raban experienced this same lowering of guard and move toward introspection as soon as he announced that he was an Englishman traveling in the US.
The parochial character and narrow-mindedness of many of the people he encountered matches up well with my own experiences in similar terrain four years after his journey. It is important to note though that Raban was treated to extraordinary amounts of generosity, both material and emotional, by the people that he met, however rhetorically bigoted they might have been. The author is at pains to acknowledge both the generosity and the puzzling disconnect that he sees between their rhetoric and their behavior.
Just one of the wonderful things that Jonathan Raban does in the course of Old Glory is show the reader the essence of American character. Their aggressive rhetoric is their shield against the unknown, but once you are brought in behind that shield, Americans are among the most outrageously generous and genuinely good people that you are likely to find.

Self-taught in this field, he puts into practice what he learnt from his previous activities to build his own methodology. As a consultant he experienced the real economy through various sectors: energy, banking, healthcare, manufacturing and public administration. Perfect Reference Material

I expected yet another bloated book on investing, but was pleasantly surprised.

Mr. Piard starts with a simple explanation of each of the technical parameters used later to measure the performance of the discussed strategies.
Then he explains the basics behind the generic strategies (market timing, momentum, pair-switching).

The rest of the book is a pure treasure for a novice investors like me:
- The author is explaining how the simple strategies work and how to exploit them in plain English, with specific examples and performance measurements of the simulations based on historic data.
- He is then showing a step-by-step examples on optimizing each of them and explains alternatives for different types of investing stiles, each backed by hard data on changes in performance.
- In the later chapters he explores combining those strategies and is drawing conclusion on what works best and why.

The work he presents shows impressive performance in terms of both return and drawdown reduction.

The thing I liked most though is that the book's style. It's very clean, with great explanations, simple math and lots of hard data/examples. I'm a slow reader, but finished it in a day.
Unlike many other equity investment books, it is perfect for using as a reference material.

Just what I was looking for

I've recently been looking for a methodology to replace subjectivity in my stock and ETF selection process with a more rigorous approach. I've used backtesting techniques based solely on technical analysis in the past, with mixed results. My current goal is to incorporate both fundamental and technical analysis rules to create a program that beats the market over the intermidiate to long run, with less risk than typical asset allocation approaches. I found Mr. Piard's Quantitative Investing book to be extremely helpful in this regard.

A tremendous body of research is available on the merits of various fundamental and TA approaches. This book tries to keep it relatively simple, and stresses the many pitfalls of backtesting, i.e. what worked in the backtest may not work in the current market. An added bonus for me is that the Portfolio123 system was used by the author to develop his thesis, which is the tool I've chosen to use in my own research. Although this book provides a wealth of specific examples, it's best use is as a guide for those who want to develop their own models, or perhaps just gain a better understanding of what really works in the market.

The best quantitative investment book period.

I you are interested in quantitative investing this is the best book that I have found. Dr Piard walks through simple and thought-provoking examples of investing concepts, then thoroughly back-tests each one. He shows all the data, and I have duplicated many of his models and backtests. He demonstrates that momentum does not work well for individual stocks, but that it does work well on ETFs and sectors. He demonstrates that market timing using simple moving averages on the S&P 500 can significantly reduce drawdowns in many strategies and he integrates timing models with stock and ETF picking screens to prove his point. There are many eye-opening ideas here. He seamlessly crosses the boundaries between value, growth, and technical investing and shows how they can be combined. If you create your own investment models, read this. It should read by anyone who uses any screener, and should be required reading for anyone who uses Portfolio123.

One Of My Favorites Since I Was Little

How can I possibly be the first person to review a book this magnificent? I love this book, and anyone with an ounce of curiosity about the past will as well. In here, Mr. Sloane, an antiquarian with a talent for making his love of the past infectious, tells us all about how Americans used to be hard working, efficient and self sustaining, how they made almost everything by hand and from scratch, and how the knowledge of arts and crafts from tool-making to house building, were passed down by word of mouth. On every page the reader learns some delightfully amazing new fact and by the book's end, a sense of enthusiasm and appreciation for our forebears is firmly established. Great illustrations are also a nice plus and the patient reverence Sloane has for this nation as it was two centuries ago bespeaks of sincerity, not empty lip-service. A fine book to read to a child, to look at for its pictures, or one that can teach almost any "grown-up" a thing or two about the ways things were. If you own this book and haven't read it in a while, take a quiet night off and reacquaint yourself with all it has to offer.

A nice book, but not exactly what I expected

I became curious about the author's work after receiving emailed samples of his charming essays and illustrations from Dover Publications. This is the first of his books that I have read. I suppose from the other reviews I should not take this to be an example of his best work.

I did find the book overall to be a worthwhile purchase. I'm very interested in the pioneer days and found his descriptions and drawings of how things were made and done to be quite fascinating. The author also had a real passion for this period in history which comes through in his work and makes the reader appreciate it as well.

The one negative thing I have to say about it is that I felt a little like I was being scolded as a person living in modern society as I was reading this book. Like another reviewer said before me, there is a lot of talk about the good old days, and how people have changed for the worse. For example, one statement that I found unfair was the author's claim that the average modern American worker dislikes his job so much, looking forward to retirement, because he has an aversion to hard work. I believe many people are unhappy in their jobs not because of an aversion to hard work, but because of management problems, office politics, or other corporate BS- things I'm sure most pioneers didn't have to deal with. I'm sure there must have been a great joy in working only for yourself, living off of your own land, but in the U.S.A today that is very difficult for most people. The author paints an ideal picture of the old time farmers supplying all of their own needs through the land and the values of thrift and hard work. While I don't doubt that, he fails to cut us modern folk a break by pointing out the things that have changed for us which would make this lifestyle nearly impossible even if we wanted it.

I noticed in his introduction he was living in Connecticut at the time. Also living in New England myself, I constantly see small farms that can't survive being sold and developed into residential areas, and it saddens me to see it happen. This books helps preserve the memories of the old farms which deserve to be recorded and cherished. Kudos to the author for doing so.

Despite the sometimes scolding tone, I thought it was an above average book, and a good guide to the pioneer time period.

Poorly written

A stifling teaching style that overcomplicates even the simplest matters. The author is fond of using multitudes of variables that are scarcely defined, and neglecting to explain the important aspects of the problem-solving process. Little attention is given to the logic, and more to a highly redundant and nauseating notation.

Very dry text

Chemical Engineering is difficult enough without having to work with a dry text. It would be nice to see applications in current use in place of 1840 era chemistry equations. It would also be nice to have the text explain material in the same manor as book questions so you did not have to reread the chapter to find the reference point.

Inspiring story that makes it a great book

I haven't read the book yet, but saw the movie when I was younger. It was very inspirational story that anyone should read. Also, the story gives you some background info of the island of Martinique. I am definitely recommend

Through The Eyes of A Child

Young or old, many people have grown up reading of a coming of age story. Whether it is the story of Catcher in the Rye or The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, readers are compelled by the story and the hardships that the characters face. Black Shack Alley is no different. It's a captivating story about a young boy named Jose Hassam who lives in the slums of a Caribbean island called Martinique where he goes through many life experiences of identity, racial, and social class struggles. Through his experiences and the help from his grandmother M'man Tine (Amantine), Jose finds the courage and motivation to acquire an education to help him have a better and brighter future. Zobel presents this coming of age story through the eyes of Jose which gives insight into how the struggles of life was back then through the eyes of a child.

Black Shack Alley is broken up into three parts that showcase the progression of Jose as he grows up. The setting of the story takes place sometime in between the world wars and is also set in post slavery times where Martinique was still currently a colony of France at that time. Although slavery was abolished by this time, many of the descendants of the free slaves were still working for the békés (French colonial settlers) in sugar cane fields. The book goes through the struggles of living as a poor black person in Martinique and Zobel shows a good representation of this in the way people dressed and how they went about living life.

In reading this book it is important to have a little background about the racial and social classes that existed inside of Martinique during this time. The plantations in Martinique played an important role in determining social classes in these communities. The white békés were usually the ones who owned these plantations and were profiting from poor black workers who worked the hard labors of the treacherous cane fields. The black workers lived in a little land set aside by the plantations which were shacks. Little communities within these shacks were formed and within these communities social activities took place. Within these little communities, Zobel presented that the complex power structure of these societies were determined by the color of your skin. You get an eye opener on how hard it was for poor black skinned people in Martinique and the very few opportunities that were present for them during that time. Today there are still tensions between the békés and the descendants of former slaves which Zobel does a good job in showing how the complexities of these tensions came about.

This book is a great coming of age story that is seen through the eyes of a child. Zobel is real effective in giving a real innocent vibe to the book and as you read through the book you get to see the growth of Jose as a person. The flow of the book was easy to follow in which there is a continuous stream of the story and that it doesn't go off course. The book does tend to move fast but is necessary to help move the story on. Although I would recommend this book to anybody who's interested in Caribbean literature, please keep in mind that this book has been translated from French to English so there might be some language discrepancy within the text. If you are interested in a coming of age story and want to know more about the culture and traditions of Martinique, this book is a great start.
