The Scorpio Races, by Maggie Stiefvater

A spellbinding novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Maggie Stiefvater.
Some race to win. Others race to survive.
It happens at the start of every November: the Scorpio Races. Riders attempt to keep hold of their water horses long enough to make it to the finish line.
Some riders live.
Others die.
At age nineteen, Sean Kendrick is the returning champion. He is a young man of few words, and if he has any fears, he keeps them buried deep, where no one else can see them.
Puck Connolly is different. She never meant to ride in the Scorpio Races. But fate hasn't given her much of a choice. So she enters the competition - the first girl ever to do so. She is in no way prepared for what is going to happen.
As she did in her bestselling Shiver trilogy, author Maggie Stiefvater takes us to the breaking point, where both love and life meet their greatest obstacles, and only the strong of heart can survive. The Scorpio Races is an unforgettable reading experience.

Superlatives are inadequete for this book
By K. C. Martin
I have lived a good long time...longer than I will admit to here, and I have been reading voraciously since before kindergarten. I have read a lot of books. Many of them have been good, and a precious few have been great. The Scorpio Races is as good a book as I have read in many years. It was so good, in fact, that once I finished it, I mourned for a few minutes and then promptly started re-reading it.

The story is intriguing...the Scorpio Races are races set on a small island (fictional, but it feels a lot like an Irish offshore island) between Cappaill Uisce, the water horses of Celtic folklore. These are no Disney water horses...they eat meat, drink blood and kill. Each other, and humans. But the island, Thisby, and the horses are connected in ways modern man has trouble understanding. They have ancient blood ties past remembering. Two of the contenders in this years race are Sean Kendricks, and Puck Connelly.

Sean has been working with the Cappaill Uisce since he was a boy. Described by the islanders as having "one foot on land, and one in the sea" he has won the races for the past four years on a stallion named Corr. He loves Corr deeply, and the horses in his charge love him and his magic.

Puck is an orphaned girl who is riding in the races for the first time, as the first woman to compete. She is also riding her mundane island horse, Dove, rather than one of the Cappaill Uisce...another first. She is hindered in her efforts by almost everyone on the island. Everyone but Sean, who is drawn to her for reasons he cannot explain.

The two face many obstacles. Chief among them is Mutt Malvern, the cruel son of the richest man on the island (and Sean's employer). Another hurdle they must face is that each has desperate reasons for needing to win the race, but to do that, they must beat the person they are growing to love. The love story is awkward and terribly sweet.

I can't really put my finger on what I find so compelling about this book. The story is unique, and the slight tinge of magic over everything on Thisby adds a delightful air of mystery. Its written by a YA author, which may be the reason the love story is so muted and delicious. We don't have sex to rely on making the story interesting. The writing must carry the story.

And the writing is superb. The suspense simply never lets up. One is completely drawn in by the two immensely likable main characters, and many of the lesser characters deserve their own book: Finn and George Holly are two I would love to read more about. The rituals and traditions surrounding the races are unsettling, yet have the feel of ancient rhythms and rites. Stiefvater has an unswervingly deft hand in her timing and the pace of the story feels just right. The conclusion is a surprise, albeit one that satisfactorily resolves the dilemma of the two protagonists.

I was rather haunted by the story. I found myself thinking a lot about the story and the characters during the first read, and even the second. Sean, in particular caught my imagination. He is mysterious and magical and immensely attractive. Again, Ms Stiefvater reveals just enough of his background to help explain him, but we never fully understand him.

I will definitely read more by the author. I don't usually read YA novels, but this one is so exceptional that I too will make an exception.

Please make this a movie!
By laurathomas61
What a great story. I love horses and just had to see what this was all about.

The water horses are a race of beings that live in the water, emerging to feed on flesh or drag you to a watery death. The thought makes me shiver.

Every year, riders mount these monstrous beasts for the Scorpio Races. It’s hard enough to win a regular horse race. In this race, you have to worry about surviving as much as winning.

The character’s are numerous and very genuine. Puck is a young lass willing to risk her life in the races. She lost her parents to the water horses, and now her older brother is leaving her and her younger brother Finn to fend for themselves. The money from the race would help save their home.

Sean and his stallion, Corr, are four time winners of the races. He’ll ride again this year, but the stakes are much higher.

Puck and Sean have a growing attraction for each other. But both must win the race.

I so loved this world and the character’s that galloped through the pages, human and other. I wanted this one to win. And that one to win. This one to stay. That one to stay. I feared the worst and hoped for the best.

This story is so much more than a race. I struggle to even tell you about it. There’s desperation and hope, bravery and honor, magic and danger. And I couldn’t have asked for a better final scene.

Great YA novel
By Harmony
I was torn between 3 or 4 stars, but I decided it leaned a little towards the latter. I don't usually read much YA but Stiefvater came highly recommended to me so I gave her a shot and I liked it, liked it enough to get another one of her other books (The Raven Boys).
As for this book: the writing was very accessible and the whole water horse thing was new to me, I didn't even know that they were already a thing until after I finished the book. As a whole, I think that the characters were a little underdeveloped, particularly the boys. Stiefvater definitely writes a better girl character. In fact, I think the whole novel was catered heavily towards women. Not a complaint, just an observation. I'm curious to see if the next novel will have the same feel to it.
Characters aside, the story itself was good. It had a little love, some sorrow, a few stabbings, and lots of horses. It was a fun read and I will definitely recommend it to my niece--it's well-suited towards her age group.
One last thing... it includes a recipe for November cakes at the end of book. I'm super stoked about it, I'm gonna have to get all Betty Crocker with it ASAP.

The Art of Not Being Governed: An Anarchist History of Upland Southeast Asia (Yale Agrarian Studies Series), by James C. Scott

For two thousand years the disparate groups that now reside in Zomia (a mountainous region the size of Europe that consists of portions of seven Asian countries) have fled the projects of the organized state societies that surround them—slavery, conscription, taxes, corve labor, epidemics, and warfare. This book, essentially an “anarchist history,” is the first-ever examination of the huge literature on state-making whose author evaluates why people would deliberately and reactively remain stateless. Among the strategies employed by the people of Zomia to remain stateless are physical dispersion in rugged terrain; agricultural practices that enhance mobility; pliable ethnic identities; devotion to prophetic, millenarian leaders; and maintenance of a largely oral culture that allows them to reinvent their histories and genealogies as they move between and around states.

In accessible language, James Scott, recognized worldwide as an eminent authority in Southeast Asian, peasant, and agrarian studies, tells the story of the peoples of Zomia and their unlikely odyssey in search of self-determination. He redefines our views on Asian politics, history, demographics, and even our fundamental ideas about what constitutes civilization, and challenges us with a radically different approach to history that presents events from the perspective of stateless peoples and redefines state-making as a form of “internal colonialism.” This new perspective requires a radical reevaluation of the civilizational narratives of the lowland states. Scott’s work on Zomia represents a new way to think of area studies that will be applicable to other runaway, fugitive, and marooned communities, be they Gypsies, Cossacks, tribes fleeing slave raiders, Marsh Arabs, or San-Bushmen.

Review
“James Scott has produced here perhaps his most masterful work to date. It is deeply learned, creative and compassionate. Few scholars possess a keener capacity to recognize the agency of peoples without history and in entirely unexpected places, practices and forms. Indeed, it leads him ever closer to the anarchist ideal that it is possible for humans not only to escape the state, but the very state form itself.”—Prasenjit Duara, National University of Singapore

(Prasenjit Duara)

“A brilliant study rich with humanity and cultural insights, this book will change the way readers think about human history—and about themselves. It is one of the most fascinating and provocative works in social history and political theory I, for one, have ever read.”—Robert W. Hefner, Boston University

(Robert W. Hefner)

"Underscores key, but often overlooked, variables that tell us a great deal about why states rise and expand as well as decline and collapse. There are no books that currently cover these themes in this depth and breadth, with such conceptual clarity, originality, and imagination. Clearly argued and engaging, this is a path-breaking and paradigm-shifting book."—Michael Adas, Rutgers University

(Michael Adas)

“Finally, a true history of what pressures indigenous peoples face from these bizarre new inventions called nation states. Jim Scott has written a compassionate and complete framework that explains the ways in which states try to crowd out, envelop and regiment non-state peoples. He could take out every reference to Southeast Asia and replace it with the Arctic and it would fit the Inuit experience too. We need real applicable history that works, that fits. Truth like this, it's too darn rare.”—Derek Rasmussen, former community activist in the Inuit territory of Nunavut, advisor to Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (Derek Rasmussen)

Hobbes was Wrong!
By Arnold
Scott's thesis in this book is simple yet profound. He argues that many "primitive" tribal peoples actually made a conscious decision to adopt a "simpler" lifestyle in order to avoid the burdens of living under organized states. For much of history, the "civilized" state collected taxes and enslaved people, but didn't do much to help people. Tribal societies, Scott argues, adopted a nomadic lifestyle, planted root crops that were more difficult to find, and unlearned literacy all in an attempt to separate themselves from a certain political way of life they found oppressive. I was extremely skeptical of Scott's argument before reading the book, but now I find that Scott's thorough job in The Art of Not Being Governed: An Anarchist History of Upland Southeast Asia (Yale Agrarian Studies Series) is simply too compelling to ignore. As Scott himself points out, it also undermines Hobbes; far from people moving from a state of nature to the Leviathan state, many people want to flee the state to return to nature.

Historical Anarchy/Conceptual Anarchy and How Historical Processes Really Work
By Yariou Wellmouth
The thesis is pretty much be as follows:

- There exists a zone in Southeast Asia and South Asia, for the most part at higher elevations, where people have always actively resisted incorporation in anything like a state.

- These people have generally been called primitive and been considered to be lesser on an evolutionary scale, inferior versions of "us," whether "us" means the traditional and precolonial state societies in the region, colonial powers, or postcolonial "independent" nation-states.

- But in reality these people are not and have not been primitive traces of the past; instead they have actively resisted taking part in what we have always been taught is "progress." They have chosen to flee taxes, forced labor/slavery, conscription, and authority in general.

- In fact (a) these "hill people" have always been in a symbiotic relationship with states, providing economic resources, for example, via trade, and (b) people have moved back and forth across the actually permeable boundary between these non-state social milieus and the realm of states. People have, in other words, throughout history fled states for the hills and sometimes (when perceived as advantageous) left the hills for the state.

- Sadly, this may not be as possible as it used to be, but Scott's work suggests to this reader that what the non-state realm of Zomia actually means for us is that resistance to what one might call "capture" is always possible. This doesn't necessarily have to mean not paying taxes or living in the woods, perhaps. It can also mean thinking freely, in ways that are not pre-fabricated, in ways in which we were not taught, in creative ways....

Good book.

Embracing Anarachy
By Robert D. Read
A Review
The Art of Not Being Governed

Modern Society in the 21st Century has adopted the perception that anarchist principles are beliefs that can only exist outside the concepts of civilization. Hence, it is customary to equate such conditions to those peoples that embrace the freedom and liberties that exist outside of a defined Nation-State. Peoples that fall within that category are generally considered to be untamed barbarians, savages, anti-state or otherwise classified in similar derogatory terms which translate into being outside the norm. Conventional wisdom, at least in the minds-eye of 21st Century adherents is that those living outside State control are primitive, backward societies existing in the backwaters of ever advancing civilizations.

In this book, author James C. Scott dispels many of these myths and suggests strongly that those people living outside the confines of statehood do so of their own conscious, deliberate actions to avoid the onerous dictates of those who would seek to enslave them. Obviously, his expertise is in the examination of societies in that portion of the world that he terms Zomia, i.e. those regions comprised of Southeast Asia (Vietnam, Thailand, Siam, Burma, Southern China and portions of India and Afghanistan. Obviously, as an anthropologist and political scientist, he is well qualified to comment with some authority on the subject. He does not however neglect to comment on similar conditions amongst other societies that have shunned civilization to avoid the onerous effects of confiscatory taxation, forced corvette labor, military conscription and enforced religious edicts.

In the cited example of Zambia, he classifies the two groups simultaneously dwelling in the region as Valley people and Hill people. The distinction is primarily based on the altitude inhabited by the two distinct groups; the Hill people are further stratified by the approximately how many meters of altitude segregate various bands or groups one from another.

The Valley people that occupy the lower terrain are principally identified as being fixed grain producing farmers that cultivate wet-rice (irrigated) crops. Hence they are much easier to identify, catalogue, and transformed into tax paying subjects owing allegiances to their rulers. Consequently, they are transformed into not necessarily willing members of the State and are considered part of a civilized society. The downside of this upward gain in status is the attendant increase in their exposure to exorbitant often confiscatory taxes, forcible servitude as corvee laborers, military conscription, and put at the risk of becoming fair game for slave traders in either the commercial sense or as enslaved by adjacent Nation-States.

The Hill people, on the other hand, living at higher altitudes in much rougher terrain are best adapted to hunting and foraging, swindling, cultivation of root crops that are less observable by the tax authorities, and living in much smaller groups; all factors that greatly enhance their mobility. Therefore they can escape the less than tender mercies of the Valley people's rulers. While they may dwell within the boundaries of the territories established by the Valley rulers, a combination of the Hill people's impenetrable terrain and the other factors mentioned make them essentially non-statists.

Scott theorizes that when conditions in the Valley deteriorated or became more onerous the Valley people would tend to migrate into the hills and renounce their claim to statehood. Hence, in frequent waves of migration the Hill People's population would increase somewhat in proportion to the severity of social/economic conditions in the valleys. These new immigrants would tend to settle at lower elevations and the established Hill People would move into bands of lands at higher elevations. The point being that by relinquishing their statehood, so-called civilized members of society would consciously and deliberately join the stateless barbarians to escape persecution by their rulers. He also notes that in the dying days of the Roman Empire a considerable number of ex-Roman citizens sought refuge and asylum amongst the ranks of the barbarians. So his observations as they relate to Zambia are apropos to similar conditions in many other parts of the world. Persecuted settled societal groups would become nomads or herdsmen, etc, etc.

The balance of Scott's thesis is a detailed examination of how and by what means the residents of Zambia adapted their living conditions, their culture, their religions, and even their language patterns in order to avoid being absorbed by the State. This adaptation has been going on for a long time - a time-frame measurable in centuries - from pre-colonial times up to and including the colonization by European States. And, continues up into the present day and age.

In today's 21st Century World there are fewer and fewer regions that are suitable uninhabited to lend themselves to those seeking to escape tyranny. In America, for example, and in many parts of Western Europe there are scant places were a liberty-minded or freedom-loving people can escape absorption and the States imposed enforcement and coercion that accompanies their forced adoption of state-hood. At best perhaps is the ability to distance ones self from the grasp of the State as much as possible.

There is, of course, a rather radical solution which is finding favor amongst a growing number of individuals who are willing to become expatriates and migrate to other countries where onerous taxation, over-regulation and the erosion of liberties are less stifling. It could be expected that as monetary controls expand and the freedom of mobility are eroded the flight to more hospitable social/economic climes will cease to be a trickle and become a gush.

Gold Mine of a Play
By C. Behnken
I've had my 4th graders perform this play and it's an absolute gem. The songs are fun, well written, and easy to adapt to any size class. There's plenty of opportunity for participation for everyone and props and costumes are easy to find/create. Every 4th grade class should do it!

Outdated social messages with terrible music.
By ____
I wish I could give this play no stars. My fourth grader hates this and so do I. The music is terrible and grating, but gets stuck in your head. The slap stick approach with the anti-intellectual friend who is full of fall tales and mis-information tiresome. But overall, what is worse, is that is makes a mockery of the real suffering many faced to be desperate enough to understaake such risks and the exploitation of not just of those desperate people, but of natural resources. There is exactly one sentence about the native americans being treated badly, that seems inserted lile an an afterthought. This is a capitalist fantasy. In 2016, this seems outdated and tone deaf to social justice and environmental stewardship. This is the epitopme of white privledge, with jaunty tunes.

Very good text for MPH students, but not perfect
By Bartell household
This is the second year that I've taught introductory public health statistics out of Rosner's book.

Pros:

* Good sections on probability and fundamentals of inference that show enough of the derivations to allow the better students to appreciate the mathematical basis, without making that the emphasis of the text.
* Includes a brief discussion of Bayesian inference and simple examples. This constitutes a very small fraction of the book, but is typically absent from introductory biostatistics texts.
* As much emphasis on poisson and binomial models as normal models. This is critical for public health students!
* Great section on epidemiologic methods in the final chapters, including logistic regression.
* Good coverage of exact methods and a short chapter on classical non-parametrics.
* Includes some discussion of missing data analysis.
* Hundreds of homework problems to choose from at the end of each chapter, with solution sets available online to registered course instructors.

Cons:

* The two-tailed p-value is always described as 2 times the one-tailed p-value, which is fine for symmetric sampling distributions but not so good for binomial and poisson distributions. This is a big source of confusion in my class, as it's inconsistent with R.
* An antiquated emphasis on calculating critical values for hypothesis tests, rather than using p-values or confidence intervals.
* The chapter on two-sample t-tests instructs students to assume equal variances if a formal hypothesis test for equal variances does not result in rejection of the null. This is ill advised and makes the entire chapter needlessly complicated.
* More emphasis than I'd like on normal approximations for binomial and poisson distributions and corresponding one-sample tests. Again, this seems to cause needless confusion considering that it is much simpler for the students to obtain exact results.
* Some of the example homework problems are not worded very clearly, so be careful about selection. This also leads to a few surprising interpretations/answers in the online solutions.
* Minor quibble: two-sample binomial tests are covered in two different sections of the book, depending on which version of the effect estimate is used (p2-p1, p2/p1, odds ratio, etc.). I wish they were all presented together.

Kindle Edition
By lsgrant
The Kindle edition is essentially useless. The equations don't show up and none of the tables show up correctly. I have homework in this class for which I have to use this book and I am EXTREMELY disappointed that I have to inconveniently commute back and forth to the library to photocopy multiple pages from the text--spending more money, which is what I was trying to avoid by having the Kindle edition. You should take this off as something you can purchase. I wouldn't even want it if it was free!

Good but frustrating to read
By Whitaker
I grew frustrated with this book and sought out other ones, but in the end I returned to this book, because it is more comprehensive and contains more examples. These are easily its biggest strengths. But there are two huge, immensely frustrating downsides:

1. The language is downright incomprehensible. It is overly technical; it is entirely math-speak; he will use symbols and equations over words any day, including in a regular paragraph. When he wants to explain a concept, he often does so by deriving it mathematically through a series of half a dozen equations instead of just explaining in plain english what the statistical test does. There are times when I'm exasperated from trying to read two dozen mathematical equations trying to understand his point, only to look in another textbook and realize it was something I already knew and to laugh -- he had literally made something I already knew completely unrecognizable.

2. The author's habit of referring to previous examples and equations by their numbers only, for example "Equation 6.14", without reminding you what they were about. Sometimes he refers to an example or equation all the way back in the previous chapter like this, like you were supposed to just have memorized "Equation 6.14". It requires you to flip back and forth a whole lot.

For example in the first two sentences of section 7.8 ... well into chapter 7 ... he writes, "One limitation of the methods of interval estimation in Section 6.5 is that it is difficult to make direct statements such as Pr(c1 < ' < c2) = 1 ' '. Instead, we have made statements such as Equation 6.7." Of course, he doesn't remind you what Equation 6.7 is. You're just supposed to remember equation 6.7 and section 6.5, which were in the previous chapter. He does this with examples, too, building on "example 6.1" without reminding you in the least what it was about or how far you've gotten on it.

But I returned to this book in the end and dealt with it because, once again, it is more comprehensive and provides more examples. But I tend to have a couple of other books on hand to make the job easier, e.g. one of those simplified statistics books and an alternate textbook. They rarely go into as much detail as Rosner but I pretty much have to read the relevant sections in those books first to even get the general idea of what Rosner is trying to explain.

The Origin of the Zodiac (Dover Occult), by Rupert Gleadow

Those born under the sign of Cancer are generally said to be super-sensitive and to have the capacity to heal others. Scorpios, on the other hand, are often described as manipulative and secretive. Both these signs are a part of the zodiac, an imaginary belt in the heavens divided into 12 equal parts — each named for a different constellation. An early attempt to devise a calendar based on observation, the zodiac was not originally created for superstitious purposes. Over the centuries, though, astrologers and others have come to believe that the position of the sum, moon, and stars within the zodiac affects human affairs and can be used to foretell the future.
In this lively account of the birth and growth of astrology, a well-known scholar and practicing astrologist examined the nature, philosophy, and mythology of the zodiac in the ancient cultures of Mexico, Tibet, China, India, Greece, Rome, Babylon, and Egypt. Taking an objective position between skepticism and belief, Mr. Gleadow explored the controversy between those using the tropical zodiac (measured from the sun’s spring equinox) and those who favor the sidereal or constellation zodiac.
The text is enlivened by many anecdotes, illustrations, and tables, including lists of Chinese hsiu, Indian nakshatras, and Egyptian decans (all groups or clusters of stars that may form a constellation). Also included is an intriguing chapter on zodiacal gems and birthstones, as well as an extensive bibliography and detailed notes on sources.
Absorbing and well researched, The Origin of the Zodiac will appeal to students, scholars, New Agers, and anyone interested in the long and colorful history of the zodiac and its role in human affairs.

The Art and Science of Successful Packaging

This new addition to the series will provide readers with a thoughtful packaging primer that covers the challenges of designing packaging for a competitive market in a very hardworking and relevant way. The book will address all aspects of the creative process including choosing a package format, colors and materials, final finishes, and special considerations such as awkward objects and unique display considerations. This book will break down the process of design in a much more comprehensive way than most books on the subject, which just analyze the final designs.

As with the previous books in the series, it will also offer case studies in the back half of the book with the text focusing on why specific colors, formats, type treatments, and finishes were chosen, and what the resulting effects on the consumer and for the client were.

Fantastic Textbook Primer on Package Design
By Richard Bird
This is one of the best books on package design I've seen in many years.

Whether you are a student, junior designer, marketing professional, advertising executive, brand manager - or, anyone who will play any role in the package design process - this is a must-have reference. It should be required reading for the same list.

I am founder and principal of my own package design firm for more than 25 years. Even so, this is a refreshing reminder of the "how and why" of what we do.

The writing is to-the-point and without much of the useless design-speak one might expect. With high-quality images the book covers the entire process, reasoning and importance of packaging. Examples range from big-picture concepts to required details.

Well-done.

Beautiful Book

I was required to purchase this book for my package design course at my university and I am real impressed with the layout and information in this book. The photography is excellent and the book contains Q/A interviews with famous designers which turn out to be very interesting and helpful. The price on Amazon was cheaper than at my university bookstore so I am happy.

Love.
By Andrea Duarte
I had to buy this for a packaging design class, and was happily surprised by how informative yet fun it is. It could ALMOST even a coffee table book, because it's not that thick, has a pretty cover and is interesting. It helped me out in my final portfolio preparation too, because it gave me really good advice and ideas for how to create a portfolio for my designs. Good book!!

Review from a Mac user
By Kerry
Let me start by saying, the 4 star rating is primarily due to the fact that I am Mac user and not a PC user and therefor could not "test" the procedures outlined in the book. I do, however, work with many PC users within my online business and therefore have a need to be familiar with their use and be able to help my PC user clients.

Being familiar with WAMP (and MAMP for Mac), I found this book to be well written. It was laid out in a step by step format, complete with images showing the process from beginning to end with easy to follow instructions.

This book and guide is ideal for someone who already has a solid basic understanding of how the internet and computers work together. The introduction clearly explains the purpose of the book, as well as why one might want to use this tool.

A complete novice may struggle a bit as there are (and must be) some industry jargon used. The author does a nice job of adding many images to help offset some of that need.

I would love to see the Mac version of this process by this author in a companion book.
