About the Author
Lu Yao (1949-1992), formerly called Wang Weiguo, was born on December 3, 1949. The Thrilling Moment published in 1980 won the 1st National Award for Best Novella. Mao’s China, Andrew Walder argues, was defined by two distinctive institutions established during the first decade of Communist Party rule: a Party apparatus that exercised firm (sometimes harsh) discipline over its members and cadres; and a socialist economy modeled after the Soviet Union. Although a large national bureaucracy had oversight of this authoritarian system, Mao intervened strongly at every turn. The doctrines and political organization that produced Mao’s greatest achievements―victory in the civil war, the creation of China’s first unified modern state, a historic transformation of urban and rural life―also generated his worst failures: the industrial depression and rural famine of the Great Leap Forward and the violent destruction and stagnation of the Cultural Revolution.

Misdiagnosing China’s problems as capitalist restoration and prescribing continuing class struggle against imaginary enemies as the solution, Mao ruined much of what he had built and created no viable alternative. At the time of his death, he left China backward and deeply divided.

The one to read

If you read one history of the Mao era, this should be it. The writing is clear, and Walder does a good job decoding the jargon and confusing events of the times. He's balanced where some other recent histories come off as shrill. The section on the Cultural Revolution is fascinating because it provides a good explanation of the bigger picture, yet still gives examples of what was happening at specific universities and high schools. For the first time I can say I have a decent understanding of what that bizarre event was about. Having checked out several other histories that cover the Mao period, I can say this one is the best. Maybe one day it'll be available for a little cheaper so it can have a wider readership.

Clarifying Scholarship

This is outstanding scholarship that clarifies, in one volume, a very complex and often opaque period of modern Chinese history. In particular, Walder's recounting of the Cultural Revolution, with its shifting alliances and conflicting goals, is very useful. Mao is not the only villain in this tragedy, as Walder points out, but his starring role is well deserved. Apologists will complain (they always do), but anyone who has paid close attention to China and witnessed the Chinese people's and the Communist Party's continuing efforts to come to grips with Mao's legacy will benefit greatly by reading this book.

The man and the system

An excellent and very clearly written analytical history of China under socialism. Although Mao features prominently (how could he not?), this is not a book about Mao per se. Walder instead focuses on understanding the economic and social systems that the Communist Party created under Mao's leadership, and of the problems those systems in turn created. The book contains, among its many interesting parts, an excellent account of the early days of Communist rule and the gradual transition to the planned economy. The discussion of how China fit into the development of other Communist states globally is fascinating, and the explanation of how the planned economy actually worked is also a model of clarity and concision. Overall, highly recommended for anyone seeking an understanding of pre-reform China--though like too many academic books it is massively overpriced. At a more normal price it would have a better chance of gathering the wider readership it deserves.

This is a great book for anyone who has gone through or who is going through infertility, miscarriage or the loss of an infant/child. As someone who has experienced a miscarriage, I especially love the personal notes and Scripture on the back of each page. It made me feel like I had made a few new friends and that though this time may feel lonely, that I am not alone. There is something so comforting in sharing your loss, in having another acknowledge your pain and to know that you are not the only one who has gone through this tragedy. The stories of hope in this book encourage my heart, my own hope and my faith to know that joy does come in the morning and it can come during mourning as well.

Perfect gift for a friend going through miscarriage

Gorgeous coloring book on such a sensitive and personal topic. I've always wondered how I can help my friends when they experience the loss of a child. This is such a simple and beautiful way to show you care, that you love and support someone who has experienced a miscarriage.

There is love and hope and joy. Each page is so unique and has a different way to meditate and be creative. I highly recommend this for yourself or for a gift.

Turner's (arts and humanities, New York Univ.) introduction to early Renaissance Florence neatly articulates the economic, political, and religious milieu of the city's artistic efflorescence. Within that context, he artfully limns an image of the expanding urban fabric of the 14th and 15th centuries. Besides evoking the problems of artistic function, patronage, and the training and professional life of the artist, the author articulates the intricate stylistic byways that mark the onset of the new Renaissance approach in sculpture, architecture, and painting, including a survey of the interior decoration of monasteries and homes and a contextual overview of some of the key monuments of the later 15th century. While unsurprising in its approach and conclusions, this carefully etched work is more than adequate as a primer to the study of the early Renaissance in Florence. Welch (Art and Authority in Renaissance Milan, Yale Univ., 1995) casts his investigative net over all Italy. Giving particular emphasis to the social ambiance in which art is produced and consumed, his discussion is marked by its scholarly breadth, clarity of argument, and willingness to include objects not within the canonic corpus. Readers should derive a deeper appreciation of the way contemporaries may have experienced works of art and the historical, religious, and intellectual environment from which they emerged. Along with keen analyses of the materials and the making of objects, workshop practices, and the relationship of artists and patrons, the context and function of sacred, public, and domestic works are vividly delineated here. Explaining Florence

As an art lover and architect, who has been reading extensivelly about Italy and spent three weeks exploring the city, I define this book as comprehensive, delicious to read and excellent in contents. Turner explains how the city has achieved such a moment in human civilization, not only by its art, but by its economics, technology, geography, historic context, social behavior. This book is one to fall in love with, and I would put it as a must read together with Kenneth Clark's Civilization.

Beautiful book!

The book is very well done. The photographs are of high quality; the coverage complete. I purchased the volume as background information for an art history survey course I'm enrolled in (I already hold a post-grad degree), and found it to be an excellent supplement to the cursory review my textbook offered.
