This compilation shows that the reform period opened the continent to greater privation by a more emboldened local political class who, under pressure from or by acquiescing to foreign imperialist forces, undermined the struggles for democratic transformation and economic empowerment. Examining the rewards of multiparty politics, the dividends from a new constitutional dispensation, the processes of land reform, women's rights to property, or the Pan-Africanist project for emancipation shows that all have suffered severely. Through these essays, Issa Shivji calls for a new, Africa-centered line of thinking that is unapologetic of the continent's right to self-determination and sets out examples of how such thinking should proceed.

About the Author

Irving M. Copi was a philosopher and logician. He taught at the University of Illinois, the United States Air Force Academy, Princeton University, and the Georgetown University Logic Institute, before teaching logic at the University of Michigan, 1958-69, and at the University of Hawaii, 1969-90. His other works include Essentials of Logic, Informal Logic, and Symbolic Logic.

Carl Cohen is Professor of Philosophy at the Residential College of the University of Michigan. He has published many essays in moral and political philosophy in philosophical, medical, and legal journals. He has served as a member of the Medical School faculty of the University of Michigan, and as Chairman of the University of Michigan faculty, where he has been an active member of the philosophy faculty since 1955. His other works include The Animal Rights Debate (2001), with Prof. Tom Regan; he is also the author of Democracy (1972); the author of Four Systems (1982); the editor of Communism, Fascism, and Democracy (1997); the co-author (with J. Sterba) of Affirmative Action and Racial Preference (2003)

Kenneth D. McMahon studied physics, philosophy, and English Literature as an undergraduate, then took graduate degrees in psychology and philosophy.� He has taught critical thinking, philosophy, statistics, and� psychology, and currently teaches logic for Hawaii Pacific University.� His professional interests include logic, epistemology, philosophy of science, and philosophy of mind, as well as cognitive science, psychometrics, computational theories of mind, and evolutionary psychology.

Liddell goes to Hollywood

"A gun. They got mine. Can you get me one?"
"That's a tough contract," the receiver hedged. "What kind?"
"A forty-five."

You have to ask? Rule number one in Johnny Liddell's book of detection seems to be "If they take your gun, get another ASAP." It may come in handy:

He yanked open the service door. Duke was crouched at the head of the stairs. The .45 in the little man's hands sounded like a cannon in the confined space. Two slugs chewed pieces out of the door jamb near Liddell's head. He dropped to his face on the floor, tried to wriggle back into the room. The little man in the hallway beyond stood up, the gun in his hand belching orange flame. A flying splinter of wood stung Liddell on the forehead. His finger tightened on the trigger of his .45; the gun jumped twice in his hand.

This was a brisk, 'old school' detective novel, slightly by the numbers and manly enough not to care how corny its jokes are (for instance, a shapely starlet named Terry Devine is invariably referred to as "the divine Terry"). The 'mystery,' such as it is, of whether the gossip columnist is also a blackmailer (and killer?) is effectively built up and resolved.

For the second time in a row, I have found the preview at the end of a Prologue book (Green Light for Death this time) more enticing than the book in hand.

Hollywood Gossip, Gambling Syndicates, Beauty Queens, and Murder

Bare Trap is the sixth book in the long-running Johnny Liddell private eye series. At 192 pages, it's one of the longer books in the series. It's a story of a corrupt Hollywood filled with gold diggers, blackmailers, desperate studio executives, compulsive gamblers, all-powerful gossip columnists, hoods, stacked blondes, and murder.

It's also a terrific fast-paced, action-packed detective story that takes Liddell from his New York haunts to the west coast where he takes on a client as a favor to Muggsy, his sometimes girlfriend and ace reporter pal. Typical of most private eyes of the era, Liddell tries to work the case on his own and gets mixed up in gun battles, kidnapping, blackmail, and murder frames.

Kane manages to make old Hollywood come alive in all its cynical, jaded glory with gossip everywhere and ex-beauty queens working reception.

One of the best of the Liddell series.

Guilty Pleasure

Frank Kane's Johnny Liddell novels are a lot of fun. They're classic hard boiled tales of the PI with the knack for getting himself in hip deep in trouble. This novel starts in San Francisco and then moves to LA. It involves the almost always present Muggsy Kiely, his part time girl friend and newspaper reporter. Seems that Johnny is being asked to look into the disappearance of a young, never do well actor who has a key role to finish. It's all got to be hush-hush because reputation is everything in mid cetnury Hollywood.

In any event, there are scams and capers galore. Liddell gets hit on the head at least twice and he finds himself in a far more convoluted plot than most of these novels. The resolution is a bit of a push, but I enjoyed the novel and it made for a pleasant 90 minutes of reading.

It's great to see these long lost looks back in an e-book edition!

Good introduction, but somewhat qualitative

The field of bioinformatics has exploded in the last five years, and several monographs and textbooks have appeared to assist in the elucidation of the concepts involved. Bioinformatics is a field that grew hand-in-hand with the rise of the Internet, and anyone going into it will need expertise in the PERL and JAVA programming languages, as well as a fairly strong mathematical background. In this book, the author gives a very good overview of bioinformatics from mostly a qualitative and descriptive point of view, although some elementary mathematical discussions are inserted in various places. Because of the level of mathematics used, this might not be the book to use for the mathematician who desires to go into bioinformatics or computational biology. On the other hand, for the student of biology or mathematics who intends to pursue bioinformatics as a profession, this book would be an excellent choice. One cannot read the book however without visiting its accompanying Website, for the author extends some of the results of the book there.
The book begins with an historical introduction to the subject, and a newcomer to the subject will get a brief overview of some of the first sequence analysis programs and some of the first DNA sequence databases developed long before bioinformatics was recognized as a real discipline. The author introduces some of the techniques that will be discussed in the book, such as global and local sequence alignment, dynamic programming, RNA structure prediction, and protein structure prediction. This is followed in chapter 2 by an overview of the procedures used to collect and store sequences in the laboratory. To the reader not familiar with these techniques, the discussion may be too brief. The different sequence formats used are outlined, as well as techniques used to convert from one sequence format to another.
Chapter 3 takes a closer look at the pairwise alignment of sequences, and the author also outlines the reasons behind examining sequence alignment in the first place, namely that of finding the functional, structural, and phylogenetic information. The view of sequence alignment as an optimization problem is emphasized via the dynamic programming algorithm for sequence alignment. Dot matrix analysis is discussed a sequence alignment strategy that allows all possible matches of residues between two sequences. The author is careful to note that local alignment algorithms might give global alignments, and vice versa, because of small changes in the scoring system. The PAM and BLOSUM substitution matrices are compared as to their relative merits and pitfalls. A very detailed discussion of gap penalties is given, along with the role of the Gumbel extreme value distribution in the determination of the statistical significance of a local alignment score between two sequences. And, after a brief introduction to Bayesian statistics, the author shows how to to use it produce alignments between pairs of sequences and to calculate distances between sequences. The Bayes block aligner software package is discussed in detail as a tool for Bayesian sequence alignment.
In chapter 4, the author gives an extensive discussion of multiple sequence alignment algorithms, the most important of these by contemporary standards being hidden Markov models. The author though does treat the "progressive" methods, as well as the use of genetic algorithms in doing multiple sequence alignment. The former include the classic CLUSTALW package and the PILEUP program for doing msa. Although the discussion of hidden Markov models makes sparing use of mathematics, is does serve to explain how they work and should assist readers who need a solid understanding of them.
I did not read chapters 5 and 6 so I will omit their review. Chapter 7 is an introduction to database searches in order to find similar sequences. The algorithms developed in chapters 3 and 4 again make their appearance, and the reader is confronted with various user interfaces for performing genetic database searching online. The FASTA and BLAST tools are introduced as fast methods to do database searching. As computer performance increases in the years ahead, these and other currently existing tools will no doubt be replaced by more powerful search routines. While perusing this chapter, one cannot help but be fascinated by the current situation in the biological/genetic sciences. Once thought of as a purely descriptive science, it is now dominated by a reductionist philosophy, involving huge amounts of data, and sophisticated mathematics for the analysis of this data.
The author moves on to the methods for detecting protein-encoding regions of DNA sequences in chapter 8. The simplest method according to the author for doing this is to search for ORFs, and he discusses the reliability of methods for accomplishing this. Hidden Markov models again make their appearance as a tool to study eukaryotic internal exons and in gene prediction in microbial genomes. And, neural networks are introduced as tools for finding complex patterns and relationships among sequence positions, and Grail II is discussed as a system for exon finding in eukaryotic genes. Promotor prediction in E. Coli is also briefly overviewed.
I did not read chapter 9 so I will omit its review. Chapter 10 though is an introduction to one of most interesting parts of bioinformatics, namely that of analyzing the entire genomes of organisms. Due to rapid experimental advances in genetics, several genomes are now available, and this allows a more global, dynamical view of the role of genes and how their expression correlates to result in a fully-developed functioning organism. The techniques discussed in earlier chapters come into play in genomic analysis, and many other more novel techniques will have to be invented if sense is to be made of the enormous amount of genomic data currently available.

A good book despite criticism

I don't understand such a lot of bad comments about this book. In this book concepts are presented in an intelligent way, because the book is as quantitative as the biologist's requirements are. Everithing is sufficient to comprehend which are the things' mathematical basis but avoiding time-comsuming and ready-to-forget extra info. Other books are only for matematicians because they are sometimes full of numbers and complicated equations, while other ones are so simple that I imagine them usefull only for non-biologists (matematicians again above all).

This is a book that is usefull as an introduction for the initial graduate level bioinformatician (biologist) and as a short description of the techniques that we use to matematicians aimed to collaborate.

Finally I am not in agreement with some coments about what is Bioinformatics. Most of them carried out by some non-biologists here. Bioinformatics is Biology. Of course we use mathematics, but as far as we USE them, bioinformatics is not mathematics. We do not develope Mathematics, but Biology state of the art. Bioinspired algorithms, in the other hand, are pure mathematical concepts, even if they are insipred in biology. Let Bioinformatics be what it is, a quantitative and statistical part of pure Biology.

This is a good book if you are not an expert in Bioinformatics but you have in mind to be one. Study this book entirely as your first one and go directly to the difficult ones. For me, it is the shorter reading path to bioinformatics expertise nowadays.

Rushed, Needs a good editor

I am an undergraduate Biotechnology student who is using this book for an intro Bioinformatics class at the Junior/Senior level. It describes the field from a biologists perspective, and doesn't include too much math. It describes the steps that an algorithm within the program would use, and the logic behind them, without going into the complexities of the coding.
While this is a book by and for Biologists, I have found the book to be very rough and in need of extensive editing. On the first test the professor was disappointed as only 1-2 people made it into the A range. At the time I wondered if it was related to the difficulty of the text. To my surprise, my professor began to give us 10 to 20 page handouts per class, covering the material in his lectures. Although he never directly stated this, the handouts were apparently there to make up for the weakness of the text.
It definitely has potential to be a good text for biologists. If the author and editor put in significant work, this could really become a very good book. However I really can't recommend the current edition.

This book is $170 worth of kindling

This book is horribly written and full of grammar curiosities. If you doubt my review, please see the attached image of a corner of page 478 in this wretched book.

Writing aside, the layout of the pages is awful. The columns are interrupted with bright color blocks of examples in an incoherent manner. The equations are strewn about the sections carelessly. The variables are not defined after equations are presented, leaving one to go digging through past chapters and sections to find the meaning of some Greek letter. I have wasted weeks of my life on such endeavors.

The math sections come after the chapter, the questions asked are difficult and don't always get thoroughly discussed in the chapter, the main point of a section is almost always poorly defined. I have written to my professors about how horrid this book is. I feel like it was edited by a team of semi-literate chimpanzees (again, see the attached image if you don't believe me).

Bottom line? This book is a piece of garbage. Buy the book by McQuarrie instead - that is a delight!

Decent book, but takes a while to learn how to navigate

So if you're getting this book, here are somethings you will want to know.

1) Before reading the chapter, look at the end of the chapter, before and after the problem section for "Further Information" and the Math lesson supplement. You need not understand it off the bat, but be familiar with what is there so that when you're going through the chapter, you can refer back to further information to make sense of the details.

2) Don't expect a perfect walk-through for the math. You need to sit there with the paper and figure out the skipped steps. There are a lot of skipped steps. Some easy algebra, other harder differentials.

3) When reading the units, you need to beware that you will see things like T/K. This doesn't mean Temperature/Kelvin or anything other that you want to make T to be, but rather saying it is temperature expressed in Kelvin. Seems like a silly way to do it, but once you get that it makes some problems easier.

4) If you get the answer manual, It is only for odds and A parts of problems. Evens and B's are in the Purple version of the answer key and that is pain in the butt to find. So I recommend looking up the previous edition to this one (i.e 8th edition solution manual) and using that one. The problems will be found under different sections/numbering but after a little searching you'll find it. The editions don't change much. No surprise there though.

5) Beware, there are questions awkwardly phrased. There is one in the first chapter regarding a tire. I solved it with my Gen Chem knowledge and it turned out to be wrong. As a class, we discussed it with our professor and found that in order to accurately answer the question, we need to define what is a tire- Meaning is it an isolated system, or not?

6) Make sure to review your basic calculus. In particular partial differentials, cross derivatives, and the terminology. By terminology I mean, something like: You have an equation U. Express U as a function of T. Know what that means.

This is a decent book, but DO NOT make the mistake of thinking it will hold your hand and walk you through a nice path of flowers. Take your time with it and do as much problems as you can as far as you can. If you can get your hand on both versions of the answer keys, I recommend doing all the problems with one, and then returning the next day and doing the B problems without the assistance of the answer key.

I have been taking physical chemistry this semester with this textbook, and it is no help at all. It breezes over the most important concepts and focuses too much time on concepts that aren't as important. By "important", I mean concepts that need to be understood in order to solve the exercises and problems in the book. For example, it only partially explains the different thermodynamic processes, and expects the student to be able to approach the exercises/problems from every possible angle. At the end of each chapter, there are different sections for "exercises" and "problems". This distinction seems a bit misleading, because in general they are equally difficult and tricky, in my experience so far. I don't mind "curveball" questions, as long as you are provided with the general principles with which to come up with a solution, but this book does a poor job of that. It is as if the authors were trying really hard to obscure instead of clarify the main concepts. It is a struggle to actually learn anything from the text. I think one has to already have a good grasp of the material presented to even understand what the book is trying to teach, which makes the text practically worthless to a student taking the course for the first time (like me). I was able to buy this textbook for only $24; I regret wasting even that amount. I am a straight A student in chemistry, so I doubt it has to do with any lack of capability or intelligence on my part.

Principles of Optics

This is a great book that I have used often. This is a graduate text. You should have had an undergraduate course in optics first. A typical undergraduate text that I recommend is Optics by Eugene Hecht who also wrote the Schaum's Outline for Optics. This being a graduate text you should have taken math for each of the four years of your undergraduate studies. My graduate work is in Microelectronics & Photonics and I use the book now as reference book. This book covers the theory very well; I have not found any other book that even comes close.

This book is the most comprehensive and readable book in all my books collected in optics. I specifically like the chapters devoted to geometrical optics and the rigorous treatment of diffraction. I have do doubt at all in my assignment of five stars to this book. It is no wonder that many of the scientists and engineers in NASA have the book in their possession.
