Item as described

I was not sure what to expect from a beginning seller, especially since I've never bought from an independent Amazon seller. However, I am pleased with my bargain. I believe the condition of the book was the only information that was given. I was not sure what to expect as other copies being sold described the condition of the cover, binding, pages, and writing or lack thereof. As it was the only book without these features I didn't want I decided to buy it and hope for the best. The main thing I was hoping for is that the binding was in tact. When it arrived I was happy to find the binding was secure. I have found some writing/highlighting, a sticker on the spine, and the "B" in "Beyond" in the title was torn off, but I don't mind. For the price, I'm content with my purchase.

A decent math book

I needed this textbook for a 6-week summer math class. 3 weeks into the class, there are very few negative things I could say about this book. One would be this: the book doesn't explain some of the topics as thoroughly as say, an algebra or geometry textbook does. While I've found some of those textbooks to have almost too much explanation in them, this textbook, in my opinion, didn't have quite enough. Overall though, I needed an inexpensive used book for a short class, and that's what I got. I'm happy with it.

A Modern Day Parable For Everyman

When I first read Ralph Ellison's remarkable Invisible Man I was in college. Having grown up middle class midwestern white, it seemed at the time to be a marvelous piece of work that plunged me into the nightmarishly crushing world of racism from the black perspective. It opened my eyes to racism in a way that I could never have possibly percieved from the perspective of my own limited experience.
Thirty years later I pulled this book from the shelf and reread it on a whim. A number of things struck me on this reading that never occurred to me from my earlier limited youthful perspective.
First of all, Invisible Man is timeless and I find it hard to believe that it was written nearly fifty years ago. This book is about far more than racism, it is about loss of innocence and rape of the soul. It is about exploitation, manipulation, and the gross hypocrisy that exists in our society.
It is a work of great literary merit. Ellison displays verbal virtuosity of great breadth with beautiful and lyric eloquence. It is at times so dark and overbearingly heavy that a sensitive or less serious reader might cry out for relief. It is so relentless in plunging from one nightmarish episode to the next that one can reasonably say that it is often over the top, and yet any fair-minded reader can easily forgive the excesses of Ellison's vision for the importance of the message that it brings home.
Any reader, be he or she black, white, yellow or brown, who must make a way in this world--any reader who attempts to rise from the consciousness of the unprivelidged child or who is a seeker in life, should read Invisible Man as a cautionary tale as well as a great work of art. Please read this book if you have the courage and honesty to see the world through the eyes of the victim. This book has helped me to see those who had often in the past been invisible to me and I thank Ralph Ellison for making it possible.

fantastic--not just about racism

This is one of those books I was assigned in English class that I didn't want to read. How wrong I was--this makes my short list of the greatest stories ever written. Ellison creates a vivid and shocking picture of America and society's subversion of individual identity in search of something larger. He said soon after the book was published that "Invisible Man" was not just about the black experience in America, it was an account of every person's "invisibility" in a world that tells us how to think of each other. The African-American protagonist is merely a vehicle for Ellison's much broader social commentary. Complex, heart-wrenching, deeply moving and of course beautifully written, this book is a must-read for anyone who thinks they have a grip on the American experience.

A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius

Ellison, Baldwin and Wright formed the triumvirate of great African American male novelists of the past 200 years. Of the three, Ellison may well prove to be the most timeless. While Native Son, Black Boy and Go Tell it on a Mountain are powerful works, they don't quite measure up to Invisible Man, in terms of sheer literary genius.
While Ellison wears his influences on his sleeve (Dostoevsky, symbolist poets, existentialist writers, etc.[he even borrows his title from HG Wells]), his writing never suffers or sinks beneath the weight of literary associations. His was a unique voice and vision.
Like Dostoevsky's Underground Man, Ellison's narrator has essentially beat a retreat from the world. He holes up in a subterranean room, where he reflects on the the injustices society has dealt him. Dostoevsky's narrator purposely bumps into people on the Nevsky Prospect in order to certify that he is visible and just as important as the next man. Ellison's Invisible Man beats and almost kills a white man he confronts on an empty street, also in order to rationalize his own existence.
Both the underground man and the invisible man are filled with self loathing. Yet, in Ellison's work, the narrator does achieve a sort of spiritual progress and affirmative self-knowledge. He goes from being a pathetically exploited non-being that must acceed to the whims and wishes of the white opressor (the often anthologized battle royal scene at the beginning of the book), to a point near the conclusion of the book in which he can state he is free to pursue "infinite possibilities."
Irving Howe, in an overall favorable review of the novel, took Ellison to task on several fronts. He complained that the section wherein the narrator falls in with "The Brotherhood" portrays the communist party in an an unrealistic vein. He was also troubled by Ellison's narrative design: "Because the book is written in the first person singular, Ellison cannot establish ironic distance between his hero and himself, or between the matured "I" telling the story and the "I" who is its victim. And because the experience is so apocalyptic and magnified, it absorbs and then dissolves the hero; every minor character comes through brilliantly, but the seeing "I" is seldom seen." Though I generally have a high opinion of Irving Howe's criticism, I think he's arriving at a conclusion here which entirely deflates his own remarks. Yes, the "I" in Invisible Man is harder to see than the other characters, but that is part of the author's construct. It's the very point he makes over and over throughout the novel. How better to portray an "invisible man?"
If you've never read this important work, try reading the first 40 pages that are on display here at .... It includes the famous battle royal sequence, which is one of the best hook chapters in all of literature. It should be enough to induce you to read the rest of the novel. You are in for an unforgettable read.

Rush job...lousy book

This book was truly a rush job.

At least 1 minor error on every page.
And 1 major error every 3 pages.

That is besides many many spelling and grammar errors.

And many facts are just wrong.

Waste of my money and time

I waited until I read the whole Ivy and Cullen series. I am having a hard time writing a good review of the books. In as much as I didn't like the books, because I thought they were poorly written and sometimes downright stupid... I kept buying them because I wanted to know the outcome. I read a lot of books. Mostly adult romance. Not all are good but most of them are great and I have re-read some a few times. But this series..... I won't be re-reading it. First to stretch it out to 12 books was just greedy. I paid $26.00 plus for a story that could have been condensed into one novel for less. I'll admit the sex was hot in the books but again there was no continuity in the writing. The storyline wasn't even plausible!!! It's a bad writers Fifty Shades of Grey!!! Anyway, I'm glad for the happy ending but it seems it was anticlimactic after everything they went through. Case in point..... Cullen is being investigated for killing a patient but yet with just a few hours notice he's back in an operating room doing brain surgery..,,, really!!!! Ok I said my piece. What hospital in their right mind would allow that??? There are a lot of writers out there. I love finding writers and reading new books but I hate wasting my hard earned money on sub-par writing so I'll continue with my favorites and know I'm getting a quality read!

Great books but way to much money for the length of the books

I thought these books had a very good storyline, I enjoyed Ivy and Cullens story alot. I don't think I will continue with Ivy's cousin tho because (the reason for my 3 star rating) they are not worth the cost of the books. They are way to short for the money. I paid .99 for the first 2 and then $2.99 for the next 10 and they are only 32 to 34 pages long. Got caught up in the story so I had to get them, but no more. You could put atleast 3 or 4 of them together for the $2.99 cost. Way to much money for so little book. Sorry would love to continue with the story but I just can't afford it and don't want to wait for a half hour read.

*** Book Twelve is pretty much the end of Ivy and Cullen's story. Book Thirteen begins a new storyline featuring Ivy's cousin, Lanie Day, who was introduced in this installment and billionaire playboy CEO, Brayden Forman which continues in Books Fourteen, Fifteen and concludes in Book Sixteen.

Cherish is the twelfth book in Kelly Favor's suspenseful The Billionaire's Rules Serial and it totally rocks! This is my very first experience with Favor's work but I must say, I'm impressed with what I've read so far. This is NOT a standalone story but rather a serial with sixteen installments so we all know what that mean.... dare I say it, cliffhangers - fifteen to be exact since Book 16 is the conclusion of The BIllionaire's Rules. Yikes! Each installment is relatively short which makes them perfect for a quick break or lunchtime read. The journey begins with Ivy Spellman, a recent college graduate who has been hired as a data entry temp by Biomatrix Pharma, one of the largest and most prestigious drug companies in Boston. Out of her group, she has been singled out by the handsome CEO of the company, Cullen Sharpe who has for no apparent reason chosen her to bring him his coffee. Ivy had always been the shy, quiet, mousy student who always sat in front, kept her head down, took meticulous notes and got good grades. She has just recently finished school and has no real job experience other than working as a part time grocery clerk so this is her first real job. She has no idea why Mr. Sharpe has taken an unusual interest in her but she only hopes that it doesn't lead to her termination. It certainly couldn't be because of her good looks because she would never be beautiful enough to attract the attention of someone like handsome, wealthy Cullen Sharpe. Even her manager, Emma Marks, seems to immediately dislike her. What the heck? After Ivy spills a cup of scalding hot coffee in Mr Sharpe's lap, she is called to his office to discuss her failure of his assigned task and to Ivy's surprise, he offers her tutelage in the form of.......discipline. What? Mr Sharpe presents Ivy with a choice but what will she decide??? She decides to decline his offer and leave his office but immediately regrets her decision. Ivy's indecision and inexperience torment her as she tries to resume her work. She is invited to a nearby bar for a drink after work with Lucas and several other coworkers. There is an altercation at the bar involving a very tipsy Ivy and a group of very obnoxious male patrons. The only friend she seems to have among her co-workers is Lucas who unsuccessfully tries to rescue her from their unwelcome advances. But just who arrives in time to come to Ivy's rescue? Why, handsome, hunky Cullen Sharpe, of course! Apparently, the mysterious Mr. Sharpe is very attracted to lovely, young, inexperienced Ivy and wants to do more than just discipline her at work. He spirits her away to his apartment where he rejects her after learning she is a virgin. What the heck? Ivy leaves and is more determined than ever to stay away from the fickle Mr Sharpe but can he stay away from Ivy? Apparently not! He insists that she attend a company luncheon at a nearby venue where she quite literally bumps into Xavier Montrose, President of Vellum Pharmaceuticals, a direct competitor of her boss' company, Biomatrix. And Xavier asks her for a date! Oh my! Cullen Sharpe witnesses the exchange and is furious. Oh my glory! Cullen Sharpe may not want her but apparently he doesn't want anyone else to have Ivy either? What is wrong with that man? What will Ivy do? Will she defy her Boss, otherwise known as Sir or Mr Sharpe as he's asked to be called, and accept a date with Xavier? I think not, at least not yet. Cullen Sharpe doesn't give her a chance. It looks as if the enigmatic Mr Sharpe can't stay away from Ivy and this time, he does the deed. That's right, Ivy is no longer a virgin! She spends the night with Cullen but when morning comes, he's back to his same cruel, arrogant self telling her that she should stay away from him. What is this guy's problem? But when Xavier is waiting outside the Biomatrix building for Ivy the next day and whisks her away for lunch, Cullen is absolutely livid. He marches into the restaurant and demands that Ivy leave immediately. And now, he showing up at Ivy's apartment in the middle of the night - uninvited! Oh my glory! Poor Ivy will soon be suffering from whiplash as a result of Cullen's mood swings and his off and on again behavior. He wants her, he doesn't want her, he wants her! But she can't turn him away! She's already in too deep! And I do mean emotionally and legally! OMG! Why is Xavier Montrose so interested in Ivy and just what is he up to??? Is the email he sent Ivy real and why did he send it? Hmmm...... And what exactly was Lucas doing in Emma Mark's office at her computer and why is he watching Ivy so closely??? After Ivy finally confronts Lucas for reading her email, Lucas delivers an unbelievable confession and a terrifying ultimatum to Ivy but is Lucas Hogan truly a FBI special agent and if so, why is he investigating Cullen Sharpe? Could there be a little corporate espionage happening at Biomatrix or murder? The truths, lies, consequences and threats are slowly taking an emotional and physical toll on Ivy. Ivy is threatened after someone sends her pictures of Cullen and her making love. The turmoil is too great and Ivy collapses while with Cullen. He takes her to his home to care for her where Ivy finally reveals the truth to Cullen? Ivy may be in danger and Cullen claims he has a way to protect her from everything - but only if she marries him! What??? Even after a quickie marriage in Vegas, the secrets and lies keep bombarding Ivy at every turn. Why couldn't he just have told her the truth? Why must he continue to conceal everything and selfishly guard his secrets, never allowing Ivy to penetrate the walls he's built around his heart? Knowing what she knows now, will she still be able to stay married to Cullen? Will she ever be able to trust him??? Does he even love her or is he only using her as he's used so many others??? And now she knows for sure that there have been others! Truths are told! Secrets are revealed! Lies are exposed! Commitments made! Promises sworn! Oh My! But has Cullen finally revealed everything??? Hmm.... I wonder??? No spoilers from me but I will say this..... Super sexy dominant boss who may have control issues who loves to discipline and punish his "student"-check! Handsome charismatic competitor and former friend who seeks revenge-check! Beautiful, shy virgin who discovers that she loves to submit-check! An overprotective and very meddlesome mother-check! A mysterious and elusive father who is wanted by the FBI-check! Office politics, drama, secrets, domination, consequences, punishment, blackmail, possible corporate espionage, a claimed FBI investigation and maybe even murder-check! A private jet, a sudden eventful trip to Vegas and a unexpected quickie wedding-check! Heated attraction, sexy seduction, fiery passion, mind-blowing suspense, a smidge of BDSM, steamy sex and an unhealthy dose of agonizing angst-you bet! Oh my God! That and a whole lot more! This story just gets better and better! The story is smart, exciting, fast-paced, suspenseful, compelling, arousing and seductive. The dialogue is smart, well executed and flows effortlessly. Enjoyable Wisdom Real Insight into what great human accomplishment is all about

This is a kind of book I most enjoy. It is the kind that is tasted and tested in small quantities slowly savored. The idea is a very good one. The author has scanned the words of Nobel Prize winners and chosen one- thousand wise sayings. He groups the sayings into subjects such as Failure and Work. He then gives the opportunity to reader to enjoy the tidbits and even when possible compare them with each other. Clearly there are certain basic messages and themes that pervade the work. Hard work cannot be substituted for. Nor can Persistence. Failure is a preliminary to Greater Effort. The Name of the Game is not above all Pride and Glory but making a real contribution.
This is a book by Nobel Prize winners which gives the rest of us real insight into what great human accomplishment is all about.

Beautiful edition of a classis

As another review noted, the illustrations in this gorgeous edition of Anderson's Fairy Tales are a bit creepy, and probably not suitable for a very young child. They are, however, very beautiful and make a wonderful counterpart to Anderson's very creepy tales. All of the pictures are a bit "modern," very bright, and the print quality is very high.

I was looking for a book with illustrations suitable for a young child, so my daughter would be able to look at some pictures while I was reading to her. Unfortunately, most of the illustrations in this book are rather scary. I don't think I can have her look at those without causing her to have nightmares. The fairy tales are first class, of course.

Some of the stories were ok. But unless you are willing to spend a fortune purchasing all the series don't waste your time reading this.

Average Book on Panic

If you have panic disorder and are looking for a truly helpful book, you may find more understanding and relief in any of Claire Weekes' three texts, George Clum's "Coping With Panic" or R. Reid Wilson's "Don't Panic".
I don't feel this book adds much that hasn't already been said more clearly before. Sorry.

As Good as it Gets!

This is a superb exploration of the debilitating disease of panic and other anxiety disorders. Dr. Root does an outstanding job of delivering the message in nothing less than a staggering poetic exploration of this topic. A must read for all whom have experienced panic attacks.
