Instant and powerful illumination

Highly recommend this study of the "development" of Trump's foreign policy world view by Charlie Laderman and Brendan Simms (both at Cambridge). I put "development" in scare quotes because a key part of their argument is to show that Trump's vision has NOT essentially changed since the 1980s. Indeed, in an interesting but surely key move, they argue that his most basic vision originates in his childhood in the solipsistic "who lost China" discourse of the 1950s:

"As Brogan noted, many Americans held to “the illusion that any situation which distresses or endangers the United States only exists because some Americans have been fools or knaves.”[ 2] Donald Trump was a child of the 1950’ s and, just as his domestic agenda is a nod to that era’s vision of the American Dream, his worldview reflects the mentality that Brogan identified. For Trump, almost every international problem that besets the United States is explained by the idiocy of its leaders."

They then go on to show how Trump's basic framework was elaborated in the 1980s in conventional critiques of the period of European and Japanese free riding. From the early 2000s he then substituted China for Japan as the Asian boogey man.

The book is also extremely useful in pinpointing how late in the day, from 2010 onwards, Trump began to assemble some of his other opinions i.e. hostility to Obama, politicized hostility towards migrants (as opposed to common or garden racism), fondness for Putin.

Seeing Trump as basically locked in an endless replay of the 1980s I think is an important key to understanding his domestic policy as well. He never got over the first traumatic impact of globalization. Or that era's backlash politics.

Simms and Laderman are well known as exponents of a grand strategic approach to history and if you like this you may also like the short essay by Hal Brands and Colin Kahl. Brands at least shares with Laderman a Yale connection.

Very insightful and entertaining read!

An excellent book all-around. Both critics and supporters of Trump have a lot to learn from this extensive examination of his pronouncements over the decades. The authors, both respected scholars, provide an objective view of the origins of Trump's worldview, and summarized it in this short, very readable book.

Onision is best known for the thousands of online videos he's performed in. He found inspiration in self-expression through making videos when he was only 15 but didn't pursue regular online video production till he had been enlisted in the Air Force for a few years. Onision was only inspired to begin writing books when he found there was an area of self-expression he had not yet tapped into. Onision puts pieces of his own life in every book he writes. There is no book by Onision that does not have tremendous meaning to him. The characters, the environments and events come from the heart, mind and even at times life of the author. Onision does not have a publisher, his books are imperfect. Putting words through a filter is like putting makeup on your face, all these flaws are part of each story, just like each story is part of the author.

10/10 would fap to again.

This book follows the adventures of a lovable, conservative Christian redblooded meat eating all American hero in his fight to destroy terrorism and the liberal agenda. I especially loved how the author described the scene where he lovingly caressed the golden frame of his painting of George W. Bush while eating a 30 oz steak before it was time to protest Planned Parenthood. "If only we had one more term with you" he whispered to the painting as a tear fell upon his confederate flag he so lovingly cherished.

This book brought tears to my eyes. Beautiful. My favorite part was when Andy Biersack rode off into te sunset with Onsion on a dinosaur eating black bean burgers. Please read sections of this book at my funeral.

An Accessible, Informative Introduction to Psychology

Ian Fairholm’s Issues, Debates, and Approaches in Psychology is a remarkable achievement. It is at once so accessible that an interested high-school student with no prior exposure to psychology could grasp it and yet so informative that even experienced students and instructors would learn much from reading it. He does a better job (in far fewer pages) of presenting the “big picture” of psychology—its historical development, controversies, and divergent approaches—than one finds in currently popular introductory college level psychology textbooks. At the same time, he manages to provide more thoroughly detailed accounts of various landmark experiments than do the authors of those bulkier textbooks. (Two examples are his discussions of J. B. Watson’s “Little Albert,” and Seligman’s work on “learned helplessness.”) His thoughtful perspective on the challenge of defining psychology as a science does much to correct careless use of the word “paradigm,” and he devotes two of the book’s ten chapters to ethical issues. He compares and contrasts five major approaches—behaviorist, biological, cognitive, humanistic, and psychodynamic—fairly and accurately, identifying strengths and limitations of each and where each stands with respect to the issues and debates addressed in this book, e.g. nature and nurture, free will and determinism. He accomplishes all this in a little over two hundred pages, including glossary, references, and index! If Fairholm’s book were required reading in introductory psychology courses, it would prepare students to put the remaining course material in a more meaningful context. I work as an adjunct instructor at a community college where I refer to this book in lectures and recommend it to students and colleagues.

The one Reiki book to have

Books don't usually come with a caution label, but this one should. Be prepared to: be mesmerized by the flow of words on a page; be warmed by Arjava's passion for the subject; inhale the story of Reiki's journey at the level of your soul; and most of all, lose track of time.

If you've met Arjava, you'll recognize his voice. It's as if he is sitting across the table, sipping a hot coffee, relating his delightful adventure into the Japanese world of Reiki. He introduces us to Usui Sensei's ancestors, and gives us a peek into the original Reiki Ryoho Gakki. We travel in time from Usui sensei's birthplace to his memorial. We meet Hayashi sensei and the Yamaguchi family. This is an up-dated history of Reiki, based on written journals, documents, family photos, and interviews. Arjava tells us the background story - the history and spiritual culture of Japan - so we get a better understanding of the events that influenced the development (and later decline) of Reiki in its place of origin.

And then we are off to Sacred Reiki sites. More than a travel guide, Arjava uses personal stories, and at times, humor, as we meander from one site to the next. This chapter is plush with photographs.

He goes on to tell us about the deities and spiritual practices that are rooted into some of the beliefs and techniques of the Reiki we do today. This tapestry of spiritual identity helps to explain the dynamic realm of guidance and power, available to us in Reiki practice.

The final chapter covers healing with Reiki, including perception exercises, gassho meditation, and Japanese techniques. There are also interviews with Fumio Ogawa sensei, and Chiyoko Yamaguchi sensei.

Although designed for those who teach, this book is a valuable resource for everyone who practices Reiki. I would also recommend it for those who have an interest in learning more about this simple, yet powerfully effective, Japanese healing art.

Wonderful book, a " must read" of Japanese Reiki

I love this book heartily and read it all the time whenever I am free.
Frank give us a clear picture about traditional japanese reiki history and technique.
You can get the true spirit of reiki through this wonderful book.

The most important thing is that Frank always account for the imformation source of each topic
He always tell us when regarding to some topic
Koyama sensei(teacher) says...
Ogawa sensei says...
Chiyoko sensei says...
and his opinion is ....

Frank never mix what he haved learned from those teacher with his own opinion.

Just another Reiki book

Another book about Reiki by Frank Better. I consider this author to be one of the best Reiki teachers in the world. But this work is not grounbreaking. It's "just another book about Reiki".

I love the history part, but it's not a complete history - still, it provides some new information about Reiki which can be used as a reference to Reiki teachers. I also enjoy the part about roots of Reiki and historical sites that Petter describes. This, along with a lot of photos, makes this a curious and enjoyable read.

Finally, the information provided by Mrs Yamaguchi and the Gakkai organization is also a great reference resource for every Reiki teacher.

Thus, my opinion is simple - it's a good, informing, enjoyable book, which is not groundbreaking, but it's a nice resource for every Reiki teacher and practitioner out there.

I just bought this book, and like the way it is organized and written. I'm not sure why it is offered without the CDs, when very early in the book it states that the CDs are necessary to get everything out of the lessons?

... than the previous edition as it contains both Continental and Latin American Spanish in the one course. This is a very good source for those wanting to begin learning the language seriously as it truly does take you to an intermediate level of fluency.
CAUTION: DO NOT PURCHASE THE KINDLE VERSIONS ANY OF THESE TITLES! You will be very disappointed as you can see in any of the Kindle reviews of this product and and any other language.

This comes with book and CD. It's a good, glossy, well-organized textbook if you are an adult trying to learn Spanish. It covers Spanish as spoken in Spain and Latin America, so you get the benefit of hearing the different kinds of accents in the audio.
