A must-have for every school nurse!

Had been reading the hype about this book coming out and could not wait to get a copy. Did get it here for a little less that list price but what a deal. The most comprehensive text to date on School Nursing. A must have for every school nurse without a doubt. And this author is publishing a School Nurse Certification Review that is due out in July 2008, cannot wait to search for it here to save some dough!

This is a book that every School Nurse should have. It is a constant resource for your everyday practice. The book is very large, but there is so much information in it, that I can't see cutting anything out to reduce the size. If you are a school nurse or even thinking about becoming a school nurse, this is a must have!

Jaundiced but interesting

Calt denigrates almost every other bluesman of that time and place--except, perhaps, Robert Johnson. Still, the book contains invaluable information about an elusive subject. Anyone who admires Patton's work and is interested in the period should be able to tolerate Calt's excesses. His bile is put to better use in his bio of Skip James--whom Calt knew personally. That very quirky (and sometimes fascinating) book becomes as much a study of the author as of his subject. And they deserved each other.

Stephen Calt is very annoying

According to Stephan Calt, Charlie Patton could walk on water, invented sliced bread, and would have single handedly won WWII for the Americans if he had lived long enough....

However, if you can get past Calt's tiring badmouthing of anyone who was not Patton, you are in for a fascinating read. The research done by Gayle Wardlow is excellent, making the reader feel as if they have been transported to 1920's-1930's era Mississippi. Interviews with Patton's contemporaries are very interesting, and accounts of other blues muscicians (including Memphis Minnie and Willie Brown to name but a few) complete questions about their lives that CD liner notes leave out.

This "bible" of Charlie Patton's life would have received 5 stars, were it not for Calt's amateurish writing style.

Great research by Wardlow marred by Calt's poor presentation

This book is fairly essential to those interested in the
music of Patton and his contemporaries, as it is based on
the comprehensive research on the subject by Gayle Dean
Wardlow, research which is largely unavailable elsewhere.
Unfortunately, Calt's presentation of this information is
poor at best, and downright malicious at times. His writing is
typically peppered with ad homien attacks at his subjects,
and this book is no exception. The book is also in desperate
need of thorough editing... one sometimes wonders how it got published
at all.

Very useful DBA book !

I have been an Oracle DBA for the last 7 years and have used Oracle7, Oracle8 extensively. I usually buy quite a few Oracle books for my reference. I must say that this Oracle8i DBA Book is very well written and has a totally new format, the Questions and answers which guides the reader on how to implement the feature. I must say that the scripts that are available for download are very accurate and useful. The replication topic was excellent and I was able to replicate my two database fairly quickly. Partitioning has been covered in detail and with good examples. If you want to implement standby database then this is the book, it provides A to Z on it with examples. This book is much better than any other Oracle Press book on Database Administration. I have already used this book on a number of occasions and I think the author has done a good job in providing an easy-to-read book. I highly recomend this for intermediate to advanced DBA. - Good luck !

Most useful DBA book I've read so far

As an Oracle Instructor and DBA I've had the opportunity to review numerous Oracle texts for DBA's and have to say I've been quite disappointed with most of them. Mr. Yuhanna's book however is an exception. Out of the many DBA texts I have on my shelf this is the one I goto most frequently. Unlike other texts which spend excessive amounts of time covering uncommonly used features and little to no time covering commonly used features this books covers almost all the basics in a hands on approach. The book is setup in a step by step how-to format. Although it doesn't discuss concepts much that is not its purpose and the best concepts book is the Oracle Documentation anyway. I've have yet to see a good how-to DBA book until I came across this one. As a consultant/instructor I recommend it quite frequently.

Practical Oracle DBA Book !

I found this book to be very useful for DBA related tasks. It has covered topics such as Tablespace administration, Parallel execution very well. It uses a FAQ approach, where a question is answered using scripts and examples. Also I liked the Standby Database topic, it has step-by-step implementation, including how to recover upto the last commited transaction! I also found the topic on Advanced Oracle Replication to be very useful and practical. I would highly recommend it to any DBA. It has quite a few scripts and examples that makes it interesting to read. Also I have so far not found any script errors, the author has really done a good job.

The present as window on the past

Bell compares modern descriptions of anorexia nervosa with the recorded behavior of some of the best-known Italian female saints from the thirteenth to fifteenth centuries. He argues that Clare of Assisi, Catherine of Siena, and other holy women were not only victims of a disease, but also in a way victims of a medieval Christian culture which allowed young women no other way to experience the disease's effects than as symptoms of religious fervor.
Bell's attitude toward his sources is capricious - sometimes he treats his medieval sources as literal truth, sometimes as distorted, agenda-ridden hagiography. They are, undoubtedly, a bit of both. Nonetheless, it is obvious that these holy women were more likely than their male counterparts to practice ascetic - even bizarre - food rituals in lieu or excess of other ascetic behavior. In this respect, Bell's book necessarily suffers in comparison with Caroline Walker Bynum's _Holy Feast and Holy Fast: The Religious Significance of Food to Medieval Women_, for Bynum spends a great more deal of time considering the phenomenon of female fasting in the both its broad medieval and specific Christian contexts. Still, Bell's argument for a connection between the rise of "holy anorexia" and the development of the mendicant orders is an intriguing bit of historical cause and effect.
Bell's methodology suggests that the "bizarre" behavior of women so removed from our own time is actually very familiar. While the argument itself falls flat at times, he does shed new light on an issue which could otherwise too easily be dismissed as spiritual excess.

Wonderful piece of history

Bell compiles some wonderful information about the topic of anorexia among Catholic saints. I have given it five stars simply for the work that went into compiling this informative piece of work. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

This book is an excellent historic study of women possesed with piety, most of these women were nuns from the 14-15th century. They expressed a dedication to Christ through an aesthetic lifestyle that included starvation, self-inflicted torture, mystical hallucinations and extreme self-denial. The women who starved to death gained a martyr like status. A facinating book!

The Nephilim Trilogy

I think to really appreciate this book, you need to be familiar with the author and the subject matter. L.A. Marzulli is a Christian author, lecturer and film maker who extensively researches material most Christians will not discuss "in polite company" so to speak. If you have ever seen him on Prophecy in the News or seen his video series The Watchers you know what I mean. He researches topics such as the Nephilim, aliens abductions, cattle mutations, crop circles, and many other super-natural phenomenon and then demonstrates how it can be linked to the End of Days (book of Revelation) and the coming deception. The book is written as a novel but also educates the reader on how these events could tie in to the End Times. It is entertaining whether you are a Christian or not but if you are and your Church doesn't discuss much about the End Times or great deception then this book will give you some insight. The only downside of this book is that it is so large it is difficult for me to hold and read because of my arthritis. I would recommend that if you have this problem you either buy each book separately or if there is a kindle version buy that. Otherwise it has held my attention even better than Hunger Games and Divergent (just my opinion). I also highly recommend L.A. Marzulli's video series The Watchers if you have more questions after reading the book(s).

Faction presented as fiction

I've read L A's recent books and talked to him at 2 conferences. I didn't even know he had written fiction until recently. I can't believe the 1st book was written in 1999. It is totally current with today's DNA testing on possible nephilim skulls in Peru!! It's like he had this info on area 51 etc. but had to present it as fiction because people weren't awake enough then to believe so much was factual. You were ahead of your time. Thanks for conveying these things in an exciting engaging plot that is more relevant today than it was 15 years ago!

This is one of my favorite series. I read this as a young man and have read it a few more times since. I like the subject matter and how it was presented. If you like fiction that has been researched to make it believable then you need to read this series all the way through.
