Surprisingly Relevant

Shannon Jung provokes a searching awareness of our attitudes toward food, distribution ethics, and a different context for eating disorders that is surprisingly relevant for our time, in Food for Life. Though dealing with important and often sobering realities, Jung's writing is easily followed and engaging. No idealist, nor "preacher," Jung leads us through a valuable reflection of our neglect of the whole self while feeding our bodies through unconscious consumption. Highly recommend this book for insights on more intentional and interconnected living...it was not what I expected.

Food for Life is Powerful!

First, to clear up any misconception, let me be clear. Far from being a self-help book for weight loss or eating disorders, Food for Life, is theology and religious philosophy. L. Shannon Jung's book is a treatise on food and the physical and spiritual hungers that drive our interactions with God, one another and the world around us. It is a powerful commentary on the social, institutional and systemic ills that pervert our attitudes toward the food we eat and how we can begin to return to a place of moral, spiritual and physical health. Jung tempers his critiques with a pervasive joy of food and eating, and what he insists should be the celebration of God and creation. Jung is a Christian theologian and Food for Life is clearly written from that perspective, but the insights he offers are universal and, in my opinion, provide a welcome companion to important other topical works such as; Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemma and Weber's Food Inc.

Duh, Read the descrition!!!

Bought on recommendation of a recent acquaintance,I might have gotten the title wrong and I didn't read the description.
This book is very christian and being that I cannot stomach any religion imagine a food book with a religious bent. This went straight into recycle bin so hopefully it's something more useful now, like toilet paper.

My daughter's favorite book

We first found this book at the library. It has very simple pictures and words in it that my daughter loves. We do sign language for the different animals and she picked it up so quick! She is 13 months.

First book and a favorite!!!

Bought this for my little guy when he was two weeks old and he was enthralled from the first reading. At 6 months, it is still a favorite. Now, I can just recite the book from memory when we don't have the book around and the familiarity of the words can calm him down. It's magical!!! Also, the simple text allows for easy translation if you want to use it as a bilingual book.

Hip, Hop by Catherine Hnatov is a good book for ages 3-5. The easy to navigate book is color coded so not only does it challenge children to learn about various animals and the sounds they make, but they can also learn various colors.

Hip, Hop has been published in various languages. I think this was a smart move on the author and publisher's part. This is certainly a book that should be in a young child's beginner library.

A MUST HAVE for Kamado Owners!

I consider myself to be an expert Kamado Grill user/owner as it's part of my professional life cooking on them. There are very few books on the market dedicated to Kamado Cooking so when I found out Mr. Grove had published this one, I ordered it right away! I had been following his blog online for a couple years and I know his culinary skills on the grill are outstanding. This book is particularly helpful for a new/inexperienced Kamado owner because it gives you a lot of detail on how the kamado grill works and how to operate it properly. Kamado grills are fantastic cookers and grilling is just a small part of what they do. I like to consider them as charcoal fired ovens, and when you start to think of them this way, a world of opportunity opens for you! This book starts you on your journey by explaining the parts of the kamado grill, how to start it up and how to control your fire for cooking at various temperatures. Controlling the airflow through the grill is the key to controlling the temperature and this book gives you everything you need to know about those techniques. Beyond that, this book gives you a ton of insight into what accessories you want in your arsenal as you become a Kamado GrillMaster! All this is in just the first pages of the book! After those basics are covered, you are treated to a ton of great recipes that take advantage of every possible type of cooking you would want to do on your Kamado grill. This book is not just for beginners. There are recipes and techniques covered here that will benefit Kamado cooks of all levels. Don't let your outdoor cooking bookshelf fall short by not picking up a copy of this book!

This Is The Book That SHOULD be included ...

If a person is simply looking for a/another collection of recipes, this is not your book.

If a person is interested in 87 different rubs or 93 different marinades or 107 different barbecue sauces, this book will sadly disappoint.

If, on the other hand, a person is genuinely wanting to explore all (well, maybe not "all", but at least 27 or so) DIFFERENT ways the Kamado can be used, with realistic recipes providing good, solid examples of those techniques, then this is the book to buy.

The author's introduction says "I want to provide Kamado owners with inspiration and a toolkit of ideas to help them explore what their ceramic cookers can do." He accomplished that goal with flair, photos, and style.

The Best Kamado Grill Book, Hands Down.

This book is an invaluable resource for any Kamado owner. I'm on my second Kamado (a Grill Dome) and have been grilling on a Kamado for more than three years and found some great nuggets of information on almost every page. I thought I'd mastered the Kamado, but now I have so many more tricks and tips that I have to experiment with - the paper towel method of lighting the grill, an ingenious way to grill stuffed pork chops to keep the stuffing in, how to make cleaning the inside of the grill simple and easy, marking the vent every half inch to make for more precise temperature control, cold smoking and also salt block grilling. I feel like my grilling horizons were just expanded ten fold.

This book is not filled with 300 recipes of which half are crap. It's more focused on methods for grilling with the Kamado with the cream of the crop of recipes that show how those methods can be used to perfection. I considered myself a Kamado expert and now I feel that I have so much more to explore and that's a good thing. There is no such thing as knowing everything in terms of grilling and BBQ, but this book is a good step on that journey. I think it's time to order a second copy for my dad, a fellow Kamado Konnoisseur.

About the Author

David Ormerod is Professor of Criminal Law in the Centre for Criminal Justice Studies at the University of Leeds. He is the Cases Editor of the Criminal Law Review and publishes monthly commentaries in that journal. He has published widely on aspects of criminal law, the law of evidence and procedure. He is a Barrister, and a Door Tenant at 18 Red Lion Court.

I loved how she got so deep into the WHOLE story

Aphrodite Jones outdid herself in this well-researched book. I watched the trial & thought I knew all about it but this book proved I did not. I loved how she got so deep into the WHOLE story. Noel & Knoller are two of the raunchiest people I have ever read about. They are pond scum, period.

Very well detailed - could not put down!

Although I find it a bit disconcerting to mark 5 stars for a book that details such horror and trauma that affected so many people and lives, I could not put it down. The author does an excellent job detailing all events that eventually culminated in the savage attacks that ended an innocent woman's life. I find myself still thinking of portions of this story, finding it incredulous that some dog owners value their dogs more than people. And I also find myself hoping Karma takes care of the sick, sick couple who are featured in the book.

I read this in a used paperback edition which is out of print, so I'm happy to see it's now available for Kindle. A horrifying story very well-told by Aphodite Jones. I hope this book becomes a true crime classic, because it is an excellent read. If you like this, look up this author's other books as well.
