I liked the concept of this book. It explores just how fragile our bonds and our sanity can be when deliberately manipulated by a calculating interloper. The book looks at the dark side of human nature and the many ambiguous motives that people can have. The concept is interesting, and the writing was good, but for me, there was still something missing. I did not like the character of Cass well enough to root for her.

Nearest Thing to Crazy

This is a powerful, well written and disturbing read. Ellie Black, a glamorous novelist, moves into a small close knit rural community. She is quickly accepted by the group and involved in local events and fund raising activities. Everyone seems to like Ellie, except Dan's wife who narrates part of the book. Cassandra dislikes Ellie on sight and very soon finds her own life and place in local society is being insidiously undermined. Is it all in her head or is something sinister going on? Dan thinks she's losing the plot and says so.

If you have ever been in a situation where you know you've had a conversation with someone and yet they flatly deny it took place, or where you know you have not received a certain message even though everyone else has, or where you're told you're imagining undercurrents or insinuations then this book will send shivers down your spine. Reminiscent of the 1944 film `Gaslight', this novel explores the borders between sanity and madness and also the nature of reality. I found it an uncomfortable yet gripping read.

I found the characters well drawn and convincing. Cassandra herself who does her best to deal with an increasingly slippery and uncomfortable situation, her daughter Laura and her husband Dan who at times appears weak and easily led. I liked the way the interactions between the friends was portrayed with people rallying round to support Cassandra without really understanding what the situation really entailed.

This is a frightening and powerful novel and it shows how it is all too easy to upset a person's equilibrium and to make them question what they perceive as reality.

Betwixt and Between

Betwixt and between is actually how I felt reading this novel. It started off as a fun mystery and then turned into a horror story, not my thing. I had difficulty reading the entire novel, it just did not interest me.

The novel is set in a small English hamlet, off the beaten track, a place where most people go for the summer. Cassandra and her husband, Dan, live a good life. He leaves every morning for his work in the city on the early train. Cass has turned an interest of plants into a business, where she designs, develops and plants other people's gardens. They have a daughter in college and all seems right with the world until, Ellie, a young, beautiful writer moves into their neighborhood. Then life comes crashing down for Cass. She misses appointments and group meets because she was never told about them. Gossip about her becomes rampant, her husband, Dan, seems more remote and her daughter starts to wonder what is wrong with her mother.

Needless to say, this all has something to do with Ellie. We are not sure what the issue is, does Ellie want Cass's husband, is Ellie a dangerous lunatic or is Cass the crazy one? These are all questions that have no answers until the last few chapters. Surprised, maybe, but it seemed a long waltz to the end.

This book is intended for Spanish learners. This is the second book of the series "Buen Camino". The character in the story is a student who after winning a trip to Spain; chooses to walk "El Camino de Santiago", all the way from Roncesvalles (by the Pyrenees in the border with France) to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia. This second level book continues with all the experiences the character has while walking from Pamplona through Leon.

This reading and listening program is intended for intermediate Spanish level. Most of the vocabulary has been carefully selected to match vocabulary selections and grammar tenses appropriate of introductory Spanish textbooks. An easy reading Spanish story is enhanced with the listening in the audio book version. Please note that this book will not be as effective if only reading it. Its effectiveness results from the simultaneous combination of Spanish reading and listening. The cognitive process of assimilating and comprehending the language is enhanced when the audio is played while the student reads. Very effective for new Spanish learners as well as for heritage learners that are familiar with words but don't know how to write Spanish.

The book has QR codes that can be scanned using a tablet or phone to play the audio book. You may also access the links that will take you to the audio and you will be able to play it in a computer. The objective is that you can read the story simultaneously. In case you are not familiar with the scanning of QR codes, the book is also available as an audio book in Audible, facilitating the reading while listening.

�On this volume, vocabulary of parts of a house, food, clothing, is added. Students will be exposed to new vocabulary that is never used in traditional textbooks. As in the first volume, being the main character a student from the United States experiencing Spain for the first time, the reader will keep getting identified with the difficulties and situations the character experiences. The main grammatical structures that are used in volume 2 include: preterit, imperfect, reflexive verbs, direct and indirect objects as an extensive use of double object pronouns.

These are the different sections:

1) �A prepararse! How much do you know about this context?
2) �A leer! Reading while simultaneous listening to the audiobook.
3) Personal Glossary: Readers look up unfamiliar words and write the meaning in their personal glossary.
4) �A analizar! Students practice the vocabulary as well as discuss ideas in the book. Check for understanding. Discuss cultural points.

The total audio book length is one hour and 45 minutes.
It is advised to do a first listening/reading for the first time. Next, when repeating the content you can stop in each chapter. Each chapter has individual audio options. A helpful option to improve pronunciation is to listen while reading aloud.

This book offers good practice to review content at the end of the Novice level, as well as for the start of a new semester or school year of an intermediate Spanish level.

About the Author
Mercedes Meier has taught Spanish as a Foreign Language and for Native speakers for the past 12 years. She holds a Doctorate in Linguistics applied to the Teaching of Spanish Language from the University of Salamanca in Spain. She is a National Board Certified Spanish Teacher (K-12) and was nominated Teacher of the Year in Lee County Public Schools (FL) in 2004. She taught for the Miami Dade County Public Schools. Later, she became an instructor for Coastal Carolina Community College in North Carolina where she received the Educator of the Year award (Humanities Department) in 2013. She currently teaches Spanish at Miami Dade College in Florida. She enjoys presenting at language conferences. She has presented at major national conferences having received several distinctions. When not teaching, she loves to travel, enjoys the outdoors, film, video production and writing.

En este segundo libro de la serie El Camino de Santiago, la autora contin�a present�ndonos aventuras amenas e interesantes que motivan a una lectura realmente con sentido. Las descripciones de los sitios mencionados a lo largo de la traves�a se ven complementadas con im�genes que despiertan a�n m�s la curiosidad de proseguir .
Como lectora , me sumerg� con avidez en el contexto de aquel viaje por las regiones de Espa�a, para despu�s encontrarme al final con una serie de ejercicios gramaticales , an�lisis y reflexiones conducentes a los objetivos de aprendizaje oral y escrito del idioma Espa�ol. Cabe mencionar que la sencillez del lenguaje utilizado en la narrativa, y el apoyo adicional que brinda la autora con la opci�n de audio , reforzar�n en el alumno la comprensi�n de los contenidos y por tanto la satisfacci�n personal por las metas alcanzadas. Definitivamente me encantar�a que mis alumnos contaran con un material tan bien pensado como �ste. Ojal� pronto tengamos el tercer volumen!!

Good practice for high school Spanish students

This is a good book for learning both culture and Spanish at the same time. The author does a good job with common errors that students could make so they won't embarrass themselves. The story ends in Leon, about 150 miles from Santiago de Compostela, so I wouldn't be surprised if the author writes a 3rd book. The audio is read at a slow pace so students should easily understand it.

This part is more for Spanish teachers. My class was all girls. They all stated they would have felt uncomfortable reading a certain part of the book discussing Jenna's "time of the month" if there had been boys in the class. Pre-reading that section beforehand is probably best to determine how to approach that section with your class.

Characters do drink wine in the book. There is discussion about the best signs of the Zodiac in case either would be a problem in your school.

About the Author

Kathy Willis, Department of Zoology, University of Oxford,Jennifer McElwain, School of Biology & Environmental Science, University College Dublin

Kathy Willis is Director of the Biodiversity Institute in the Zoology Department at the University of Oxford and a Professorial Fellow at Merton College. She gained her first degree in Geography and Environmental Science from the University of Southampton, and a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge in Plant Sciences. In her early postdoctoral career, Kathy held a Selwyn College Research Fellowship and then a NERC Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Department of Plant Sciences, University of Cambridge. This was followed by a Royal Society University Research Fellowship in the Godwin Institute for Quaternary Research, University of Cambridge. Kathy moved to a University Lectureship in the School of Geography and the Environment, University of Oxford in 1999 where she established the Oxford Long-term Ecology Laboratory in 2002 and was made a Professor of Long-term Ecology in 2008.

Jennifer C McElwain received her B.A. in Botany from Trinity College Dublin in 1993 and her PhD in Paleobotany in 1997 from Royal Holloway College, University of London. She was a Natural Environment Research Council Post Doctoral research associate between 1997 and 1998 and a Leverhulme Postdoctoral Fellow between 1998 and 2000. McElwain held the position of Assistant Curator of Paleobotany at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago between 2000 and 2003 and was Associate Curator of Paleobotany from 2003 until 2006, when she took up her current position as Lecturer in Plant Palaeobiology and Palaeoecology in the School of Biology and Environmental Science at University College Dublin. She is a Research Associate of the Field Museum and an Adjunct Associate Professor at Northwestern University, USA.

The book for plant evolution

For anyone interested in the origin and evolution of land plants, this is the book. Well written and illustrated. The authors cover the earliest plants, the changes to colonization of land, the first Devonian forests and the posterior evolution of seeds and flowers. The evolution of grasses and the problem of extinctions (rarely treated in other books) are also included. The illustrations are fine and well done. The last full color plates, depicting biomes from Carboniferous to Cenozoic are fantastic!

Hurrah! The science of Botany is NOT dead. The integration of information on biomolecular methodologies; of photosynthetic pathways and of Earth history together with the more-traditional exploration of the plant fossil record make this publication invaluable. This book should be prescribed reading for every student of any of the biological disciplines for without plants there could be no animal life as we know it on planet Earth.

Great Beginner's Book

I was new to Python and fairly new to programming when I read this book. This book is extremely clear and well-written. It introduces a novice to the foundational concepts of computer science. There are many great examples and activities that the reader can jump into almost immediately. I had already written my first Python program after 10 minutes of reading.

I highly recommend this book for beginners.

Excellent for beginners

I purchased this book a couple months ago and have been thoroughly impressed.

I have never learned a programming language before, but I am fairly knowledgeable about technology in general. I decided to take the plunge, and figured the best place to start would be learning the basics of computer science.

This book is fantastic for a number of reasons. The first reason is the choice of language. When I first developed an interest in programming, one of the things I struggled with was what language to learn. As someone who has a full time job and no easy access to developers, I wanted to make sure it was something that I could realistically learn on my own. Python is the perfect choice and I would recommend it to any beginner. The syntax is very simple, its high level and object oriented, and its very popular right now.

This book is also incredibly readable. Many other resources that I've looked at that are aimed at beginners overlook some basic concepts that need to be explained. The author's often have too much expertise, and something that seems obvious and self evident to them may not be as obvious to a complete beginner. This book doesn't make that mistake. Each concept is explained simply, but omitting no detail, and the syntax is explained thoroughly (which doesn't take much with Python).

After a few weeks of working with this book, I was writing simple programs to transform data arrays and produce CSV output files for my job. The fact that you can very quickly deploy what you've learned in a useful way really gets you excited and interested in learning more.

Anyone interested in learning Python, or programming in general, should start with this book. Its just excellent.

Superb introduction to Computer Science

I'm rather new to CS, am a major in it as well. I dabble in various languages, which range from: Python to PHP to MooTools. This book teaches you theoretical computer science concepts as well as the art of programming via Python 3. It doesn't have a ton of pages and it executes its goal very well, which is to introduce students to the field of computer science and to focus on problem solving instead of complicated syntax and compiler issues. The programs are very mathematically based and it's a bit tedious (I find most technical subjects are), but the examples are fascinating if you love the idea of what can be computed. You'll broaden your mind and be ready to dive into actual programming after doing the exercises in this book.

The key point I want to drive home, is that this book is designed to teach the theory and concepts of Computer Science as it relates to programming and computing. It's not a book that teaches you Python step by step, but you'll certainly be capable of programming in Python after a thorough reading. You really need to sit down and read over the book a couple of times. I do this for my math texts as well, understanding and reasoning the material is fundamental to obtaining the knowledge in it.

Because it's teaching broad theory that applies to all modern programming languages, I find it rich but it takes far more time to understand than say just a tutorial on language. However, this book is what should be your foundation for when you eventually will begin embarking on various programming languages and development tools.

Closer To Christ

This is an outstanding book for the person who is beginning a ministry as a Hospital Chaplin or for a person who has been in the ministry for several years. It give a person the method of centering ones self with God and following God's will in ministry. Many times it is not what you say or how you say it, sometimes silence and just being with a person helps greatly. Don't be afraid to share grief with others you become more like Christ.
