Nice detailed overview of project management

I got this book a couple of days ago, since I'm getting ready for the PMP exam. Even though the book isn't geared toward the exam specifically, I have been advised by senior colleagues that I should read as many books about project management as possible. At first I wasn't convinced but after reading this book I see what they mean. Overall, I found this book very well organized and I was happy to see how comprehensive it is. I feel it helped make me more aware of the role of a manager, and helped me focus my attention on a set of skills that I need to hone.

The first two chapters offer a somewhat typical introduction to projects and project management, and the good stuff really starts in Chapter 3 ("Project Initiation"). (By the way, the book is very very comprehensive, and covers every single step of the process of managing and creating a project.) One thing I like about the book are the ongoing examples used throughout the book. They are not cheesy and they are not theoretical project ideas. Instead I feel the ideas are real and relevant (e.g. constructing a community park). That's actually not very surprising, given the author's experience in project management, and I'm sure he's drawing on some real-life projects when he wrote this book.

Chapters 4 and 5 focus on planning. I should point out that one thing I liked about this book is how much focus it placed on the planning phase. The level of detail is great (team formation, feasibility, risk analysis, etc) and it is clearly communicated that a well-planned project is a project with a high chance of success. This ensures one will avoid unnecessary ad hoc solutions while the project is being executed.

That said, there is also a lot to be learned about project execution and finalization, and the book covers those aspects as well, devoting an entire chapter to each of them. Of course, a project manager should be able to adapt to new circumstances as they arise (even the most well-planned projects faces unanticipated challenges), and the "Execution Board" concept helps ensure problems are dealt with properly and efficiently, and by the team member most likely to succeed at doing so.

The book ends with what I consider to be two nice bonuses: a set of examples, and a published article that the author wrote and published by the Project Management Institute (that's the PMI of course, which you must have heard about if you ever looked into project management certification). The examples continued the nice writing style from the rest of the book, and illustrate the concepts using two project ideas: building a website, and planning a family trip. I found the first example more relevant and useful, but maybe that's because of the technical nature of my current job.

As for the article included in the book (titled "The Project Simulation Game: Simplifying Project Management through Concrete Learning"), it describes a training method to enhance project managers' knowledge of the techniques of project management. It deals with project management as a science and incorporates simulating real-life projects. Even though the audience seems to be people who are in more senior management positions, I still found it useful and an interesting read. Just like the rest of the book!

Patrik Uytterhoeven

Patrik Uytterhoeven has over 16 years of experience in IT. Most of this time was spent on HP Unix and Red Hat Linux. In late 2012, he joined Open-Future, a leading open source integrator and the first Zabbix reseller and training partner in Belgium. When Patrik joined Open-Future, he gained the opportunity to certify himself as a Zabbix Certified Trainer. Since then, he has provided trainings and public demonstrations not only in Belgium but also around the world, in countries such as the Netherlands, Germany, Canada, and Ireland. Because Patrik also has a deep interest in configuration management, he wrote some Ansible roles for Red Hat 6.x and 7.x to deploy and update Zabbix. These roles, and some others, can be found in the Ansible Galaxy at https://galaxy.ansible.com/list#/users/1375. Patrik is also a technical reviewer of Learning Ansible and the upcoming book, Ansible Configuration Management, both published by Packt Publishing.

Recommended as a Zabbix Learning Resource

In This Book, the author provides all information needed to setup and maintain the Zabbix Monitoring Solution in various ways, including the use of the tool resources, with special attention for the Data Visualization Chapter and good points on the Vmware.

Another worthy note is about the Zabbix API Chapter: For the first time that i see, a simple but usefull sample is provided about the Zabbix API use (through the Lucke's Pyzabbix lib).

But For a CookBook perspective, maybe more deploy designs could be expectedin a next version, like the server/proxy deploy model, some graphs samples that people like, more LLD samples, API export samples, more info about the general tab of the zabbix-frontend and so on.

The perfect technical reference book!

This book gives me exactly what I was hoping for. No long chapters about the history of monitoring systems or the state of the Foss ecosystem. Just a series of chapters that each tell me exactly how make Zabbix do one useful thing for me. Each chapter is clearly laid out with easy to follow examples and the book covers topics from basic to advanced. Thanks guys. I'm ordering the print copy now, this one goes into the library.

Well worth reading for Garner fans

I've enjoyed watching James Garner through the years and so I was eager to read his memoir (this review is based on the Kindle edition, available before other editions shipped.).

Fans looking for biographical details about Garner should be satisfied. For example, who would have guessed that Garner hates public speaking and had to battle this to work on screen? He never grew fond of acting on stage.Readers can discover how and why he grew to dislike performing live, an adversion rooted in traumatic childhood experiences.

Although there are plenty of fascinating gems about Garner in his book it is a slow read at first. Garner starts with recollections of his childhood and then moves on to his first love, time spent in the military, and struggles as an actor in the 50's - alongside Clint Eastwood and others who weren't yet famous. The book does pick up speed and finally falls into a comfortable pace.

I felt that the section about his childhood and family roots could have been tighter, focusing more on the pivotal moments rather than drier parts about his family tree. Looking at these sections from the perspective of prospective readers it is likely that they'll be eager for events to " cut to the chase" sooner.

It was inspiring to see how Garner's tenacity serves him well, keeping him from giving up when even respected acting coaches told him he'd never succeed. Friends such as Henry Fonda allowed Garner to observe and pick up valuable techniques.

All in all, well worth reading for anyone interested in Garner's take on life and acting.

Bonus features: introduction by Julie Andrews and a special section where family and friends include recollections of Garner. They include Doris Day, Tom Selleck, and Joel Grey.

"The Garner Files" Just like a one on one with Jim.

Reading "The Garner Files" James Garner's long awaited memoirs written with Jon Winokur is like being in the room with Jim having a "one on one" conversation. Jim's voice comes through loud and clear (Very loud when the need arises). Having spent two years on the set of "The Rockford Files" I can attest that Jon Winokur does an excellent job of letting Jim do the talking. Jim's wonderful sense of humor, dry wit and yes his shyness comes through revealing a man who in my opinion is so good at his craft, he doesn't have to brag about his talents, he lets the work speak for itself.

His love of golf and his "Antics" on the links are some of the funniest moments of the book. Reading Jim's telling of his ability "To bury a golf club in the turf" I swore I was sitting in Jim's motor home on the set of "Rockford" laughing along with everyone else. I am so thrilled that Jon Winokur was able to do what biographers for years have been unable to do. To get James Garner to talk about...James Garner.

Whether he's Rockford, Maverick, Murphy Jones, Charlie Madison or any of the other wonderful characters Jim has played in over fifty years of acting, in "The Garner Files" you get Jim Garner, and his no holes barred approach to life, love, acting, politics all in that warm voice that comes off the page and touches our hearts like James Garner has done for 83 years.

Old School Star Shines in New Memoir

James Garner is one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, with longevity to rival Clint Eastwood and Robert Redford. He has always had the easy good looks of a man who is not vain (for precisely that reason). He has been willing to change with the times, where other actors simply fall out of our consciousness. But when I heard about his new memoir, "The Garner Files," I hesitated to read it. I was afraid I might be disappointed. I thought I might prefer to just watch "Maverick" and "The Rockford Files" or download "The Americanization of Emily" from NetFlix, take in Garner's cool charm on screen, and leave the rest of his personal storyline to my imagination.

Wouldn't you?

Well, if you would, don't.

Because James Garner is not only a good actor, he's great story teller and an even better person. To skip this book would be to miss a memoir of honesty and depth -- the story of Hollywood's Golden Age told with grace and clarity. The Garner Files is a lovely trip back to a time when guys were guys, and gals were both glamorous and tough.

I especially enjoy the way Garner writes about the women in his life. His daughters, his wife, but also his co-stars, Rita Moreno, Mariette Hartley and Julie Andrews, who, in turn, writes a heartfelt introduction to the book.

Another surprisingly moving part of the book is the chapter entitled simply "Politics." Garner, it turns out, is cut from the celebrity cloth of "Do Something" rather than the other more familiar swatch: "Lay Low, Lest Political Action Hurt Me At The Box Office." In Garner's day, the choices were presented starkly -- literally, in black and white. Garner marched on Washington, for example, in 1963, a highly controversial move; he tried to make the moral choice, every time.

They just don't make stars of the Silver Screen quite like that anymore. But if you are feeling nostalgic for a hero, read "The Garner Files."

About the Author

Tyler Volk is Science Director for Environmental Studies and Professor of Biology at New York University. Volk's previous books include CO2 Rising: The World's Greatest Environmental Challenge; Metapatterns Across Space, Time, and Mind; and Gaia's Body: Toward a Physiology of Earth.

I was Tyler Volk's student!

As a freshman at NYU, I had a seminar with Tyler Volk based around Metapatterns. It is difficult to characterize the book without going on for pages, but I will do my best. Metapatterns is epistemology, meditation, mythology, systems theory, ecology, and a thousand other fields of thought. As Volk defines it, a metapattern is a "pattern of patterns... so wide-flung that it appears throughout the spectrum of reality: in clouds, rivers and planets; in cells, organisms, and ecosystems; in art, architecture, and politics." Volk is essentially a tour guide with only a rough outline of an itinerary, but this is a good thing: rigid formalism would preclude many of the connections he is making. Since each chapter is an account of one of the patterns' appearances and significance throughout the "spectrum of reality," there is a lot of ground to cover. This results in an unconventional structure but it's still easy to follow Volk from one point to the next. The collages interspersed through the book help with this a lot, especially since the whole idea of metapatterns is largely visual. Most of the time Volk is both comprehensive and coherent, but this is not always true. Occasionally (I'm sticking with the expedition metaphor here) some bushwhacking is required to get back to the original path. But the further you get into the book, the more you can follow its logic. "Spheres," the first chapter, is the strongest, and best makes the case. This may be because the sphere is, in a sense, the primary metapattern. Later chapters spring off in different directions. Some seem not to fit well (calendars, for example), but the whole time you are getting a better sense of what is actually going through Volk's mind. And eventually, as you move through the book, the ideas become self-evident. The metapatterns come to seem archetypal.
Some of the students in the seminar complained that Metapatterns was too long, too rambling, and didn't really have a point. They had a few good points, but it seemed that those students were expecting the book to provide The Answer. Metapatterns, as I understand it, is only laying out an idea. It provides a new way of looking at things, a way that could lead to some new answers, but it is not claiming to be The Answer. Part of the idea is that fields of thought are so compartmentalized and narrowly focused that a broader development is stunted. But the really revolutionary work happens in the spaces between! Bridging two or more fields allows for totally new angles on old questions. There's no inherent problem with specialization; it is only a problem when it happens to the exclusion of other avenues of thought. Volk is interdisciplinary to a point that is nearly all-encompassing.
Amazon.com states that scientists, New Age types, interdisciplinary thinkers and the intellectually adventurous will best like the book. This is true, but the book is jargon-free and easily understandable (i.e., NOT a standard science book). Do not allow yourself to peg the book; it will most likely shake off any label you apply. Instead, just pick it up without any agenda and you will probably take away something worthwhile.

Form, space, & disorder?

As a practicing architect who has a regular opportunity to explore the "meaningful making of space" this book was quite an eye opener. I've spent a great deal of time looking for order amongst the disorder of everyday life and the designed environment, finding the threads in "Metapatterns" was a good pathway to understanding the relationships. If Lou Kahn were alive today, it would probably take him to new spaces and forms. Excellent!

extraordinary and revolutionizing

Tyler Volk's book, Metapatterns..., is an extraordinary book. In the spirit of Gregory Bateson from whom the term "metapatterns" originates, he does not give the reader the whole story or "the answer," but rather provides a rich source for readers to develop their own stories and their own answers (or to make metapatterns their own). As an educator and researcher, I have found the metapatterns described by Volk to be infinitely useful as (a) tools for analyzing data from studies of cognition, discourse, classrooms, interpersonal relationships, the politics of schooling, etc.; (b) tools for designing social and physical contexts of classrooms, curriculum, and representations of material; and (c) the specific content to study in courses. Since metapatterns appear almost everywhere in every discipline and in every aspect of everyday life, they address our basic understandings of the world in ways that can allow us to make connections in new and exciting ways. It is truly a revolutionizing book. When I have taught courses based on metapatterns, the better students have cursed me for introducing metapatterns: "damn you! All I see is metapatterns!" Such comments are a testament to the power of metapatterns in transforming the way we see the world. This book is a must read for those who are willing to take fresh view of their worlds, to think critically and creatively, and to take control of their own learning rather than be spoon fed answers.

Excellent Guide to Harry Potter Book 1 from the perspective of the series as a whole.

I've gotten the pleasure of reading this book before it went live, and it is absolutely a fantastic page by page and line by line overview of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's/Sorcerer's Stone.

It comes at an especially great time in the fandom, with the release of Pottermore around the corner (and even now for those few of us who are already on the site) we find ourselves wanting to re-read the Harry Potter series while we discover the new content on Pottermore. There is no better guide to re-discovering Harry's World then Steve's new book.

Each book will give you his thoughts as well as point out things that we didn't notice the first time reading the series, clues that point to later in Rowling's books, and we can begin to see how they connect even back from the beginning.

As a fan of the Harry Potter series, I found Steve's book a tremendous starter for talking points with other fans. I highly recommend this cheap little guide book, as your map to re-discovering Harry's Magical World.

Amazingly fun and insightful

This is an absolutely amazing book for all fans of the Harry Potter books.
Steve Vander Ark share some of his amazing knowledge and observations of the Potter books,
and it is just a delight to listen to, and a great way to relive the books and look at them in a new way.

Cannot do anything but recommend it, and can wait personally wait for the next one

great stuff...I'm a listener of Steve's podcast and owner of the Lexicon book. This guide is pretty cool, delves into some deeper stuff in the books.
