I paid $400 for a full e-book course online to be on the safe side in regards to preparing for the PHR. This one book seems to cover everything that course has to offer. Excellent resource for the price and very clear and concise outline. This is an excellent supplementary resource for PHR preparation.

This is a great book for overview of HR content and testing your ...

I just took the PHR and passed on the first try. I took it 10 years ago and passed on first try, as well. If you do not have a lot of HR experience, I would highly suggest a training course, as well. This book was one of two books I bought and I used the practice tests from HRCI and some practice apps on my phone. This is a great book for overview of HR content and testing your knowledge. It does not delve deeply but is great at refreshing. I do think you should not use this alone for the test especially if you do not have applied knowledge. I gave it 4 stars because you could not use this alone, but it is still very well written.

This book provides a great starting point for studying for the PHR exam. It is well structured and straight to the point. I like that every chapter opens with a list of important questions and terms. As I go through the reading, I can locate the answers to those questions. I personally like the room in the margins so I can take notes as I go.

The title doesn't lie.

I purchased a very early edition of this book back in the 80's and you have to believe me, it changed my world. Sound, practical financial advice when you are starting out in life is an invaluable aid. I have since given away copies to all the young people I know as a graduation gift and like to think it has helped them start out on the right foot too.
I bought this update just to read Andy's insight into all the changes we are seeing in the financial arena and a quick review didn't disappoint me. I will finish reading it again cover to cover (OK I will skim some of it) by the weekend. After all when you are comfortably retired (fiscally and physically) you have time to indulge yourself with a good read.

Worthy and Entertaining

I'm pretty sure I have bought every edition of this book as it has come out, and this is no exception. Besides being the most entertaining book ever written on investing (faint praise on its face, but Tobias rivals Michael Lewis when it comes to being able to do this), the book is full of not so much financial how-to, like most such books, but financial wisdom, which is much harder to come by. Perhaps the greatest of these is: Trust No One. If you have earlier editions, there is not a lot of new text here -- it's definitely an update, not a revision.

Speaking of revisions, I do have a quibble about what appears to be a change in emphasis from earlier editions, in favor of putting a large percentage equities into retirement 401Ks; my quibble is that there is little or no mention of the more recent arguments against that (eg., Merton, Shiller; Merton, in particular, argues that for most people, that the downside risks of stocks make them too risky for retirement accounts, except for very young workers; according to this view, stocks are appropriate only once the you have reached your minimum safe retirement level of future income, taking into account Soc Security and other pensions. Until that point is reached, you should be invested in safe assets, like TIPS ladders and, eventually, annuities. This is so despite the fact that stocks are statistically more likely to outperform other investments; the problem is that there is a real possibility that they will under-perform, leaving you below your minimum required retirement amount. See Merton's article, "The Crisis in retirement Planning, Harvard Business Review 2014). Although Tobias mentions the 2008 crash, he seems to suggest that the recovery in equities since then has made up for that. Alas, for many people, it has not; moreover, equities are richly valued right now, which suggests that their historic performance is unlikely to be repeated for future generations of retirees. So as Tobias advises, "trust no one," or I would say, take with a grain of salt, even this wise and immensely enjoyable book

Sarah Hake is adjunct professor of biology at the University of California, Berkeley, and center director of the USDA Plant Gene Expression Center. She was among the first plant scientists to discover homeoboxes in plants, a major discovery that has created a new subfield in plant science.

short and to the point!

This is a great textbook for developmental biology students, or for people looking for general information on the subject! The text contains background "boxes" with information on genetics and biochemistry so you dont really need background knowledge in those subjects to understand the content of the book. It is short, so it doesn't go into too much detail but there's enough information to understand the concepts! This text is not like most texts where they are so boring and hard to read that you just give up. It's fairly easy reading and keeps things interesting enough to read the assigned pages.

Frankly, I'd rather stab myself in the eyes than read this book.

The book is written from a "biology for dummies" perspective... in an effort to dumb down the material for the masses, the authors have actually made it harder to read.

Dev bio is taught as an upper division class, so most people reading this book have at least had general biology and probably cell biology in their background. Yet, in an effort to make the book more approachable (good idea), the authors avoid the biology words we already know (bad idea). The failure to use established language of biology makes the writing inefficient and obtuse. Clearly, anyone reading this book has more than a passing interest in biology, the assumption that readers are ignorant is more than a little frustrating and it wastes a heck of a lot of time.

It takes about 4 hours to read 20 pages because of the thick and meaningless language. Sifting through all the pompous windbag bs and dense, extraneous verbiage is tedious (example... "It may come as no surprise..." "in order to come to grips with...". The chest thumping and harumping is also meaningless and distracting.

While they are so busy dumbing down biology, you practically need a dictionary of middle English language to read the archaic verbiage. "Thence" and "armamentarium"? Seriously??? I have gone my whole life without ever seeing the word "thence" used in a sentence, and I find it in a BIOLOGY BOOK??? (if you want to know why I think it's archaic, it is an adverb of Shakespearean usage). "Group" would have sufficed for the armamentarium usage, especially since there was nothing weapon or tool like about the so-described structures. (As it were, using armamentarium was inappropriate in this context).

I'm kind of a Joe Friday kinda gal... "Just the facts, ma'm..." so I find all of this superfluous crap especially irritating.

The editor was sleeping when this book got the green light... there are errors all over the place. I lost count of the mistakes very early.

This book would be worlds better if the authors thinned down and consolidated the material from Gilbert, instead of trying to re-invent the biology language wheel with every sentence. It would be a lot more pleasant to read if they keep their meaningless editorial drivel to themselves. Oh yeah, and if someone had checked for typos before printing.

The other reviewer who gushed about this book is either an idiot, didn't read it, or a friend of the authors.

On the plus side, the book is well organized (the chapter sequence makes sense). And it's cheap

Gilbert is more complicated because it goes into greater depth and covers more of the molecular details, yet it is an easier read, simply because the writing is eons better. Oh, and the technical information is accurately presented with a minimal amount of errors (number found so far in Gilbert: zero)

Good introductory text, needs a glossary.

I like the text and the simplicity of much of the descriptions of genetics throughout development. I would give this book 5 stars if they would add a glossary. Many times, they bolded terms, but used them in a way that you couldn't easily extract the meaning of the term. I could look up each term online, but the text is supposed to be my reference, not Google.

About the Author

Zenaida Sengo is an artist and horticulturist in San Francisco. When she was an art student, her love of the natural world inspired her painting and drawing, and now in her tiny San Francisco apartment she suspends orchids and bromeliads from the ceiling and nestles them amidst other epiphytic plants, rocks, and minerals. She works with tillandsias at the acclaimed Flora Grubb Gardens, creating designs that integrate plants in and around the home. At other times Zenaida can be found farther afield, rock climbing and alpine camping in Northern California.
 

Caitlin Atkinson is an accomplished freelance photographer and stylist, capturing and creating gardens, interiors, and still life. Her photography has appeared in Martha Stewart Living, Elle Decor, Dwell, Garden Design Magazine, and Sunset magazine. An Inspiring Air Plant Guide!

I've grown air plants for years with differing results (some thrive, some die). Growing information for tillandsias has been difficult to find and is often overly vague and broad. This book provides great information on the different types of air plants and super useful guidelines for watering and fertilizing. On top of all that, the photos throughout the book are beautiful! This book gave me all sorts of new ideas for displaying my tillandsias.

A Great Introductory Guide To The World Of Tillandsias

I wanted to learn more about Tillandsias. This book provides a general guide to the growing and caring of these exotic plants. It addition, information regarding the prevention and treatment of diseases and pest most problematic to Tillandsias is provided. The book is full of pictures. Instructions and guides are accompanied by pictures exhibiting the information ensuring the information provided is clearly understood. It provides a brief guide to some of the many different varieties that exist. The ladder half of the book is filled with even more pictures, numerous ideas, designs and instructions on the many, many ways of mounting and displaying these beautiful, exotic treasures.

Excellent book

This book is fantastic and gave me all I needed to know (and more) about how to care for and display my various air plants. For the first time I'm confident I'm not going to kill the poor things dead due to over (or under) watering. I keep my air plants in my bathroom, water them once a week in the leftover bathwater (along with my orchid collection) and have fun arranging them in different shapes. One of the plants is doing so well that it will be blooming soon. I can't wait!
