Although aquaculture as a biological production system has a long history, systematic and efficient breeding programs to improve economically important traits in the farmed species have rarely been utilized until recently, except for salmonid species. This difference between aquaculture and livestock production is in spite of the fact that the basic elements of breeding theory are the same for fish and shellfish as for farm animals. One possible reason for the difference is the complexity of reproductive biology in aquatic species, and special consideration needs to be taken in the design of breeding plans for these species. Since 1971 AKVAFORSK, has continuously carried out large scale breeding research projects with salmonid species, and during the latest 15 years also with a number of fresh water and marine species. Results from this work and the results from other institutions around the world have brought forward considerable knowledge, which make the development of efficient breeding programs feasible. The genetic improvement obtained in selection programs for fish and shellfish is remarkable and much higher than what has been achieved in terrestrial farm animals.

Rafal Kuc

Rafal Kuc is a born team leader and software developer. Currently, he is working as a consultant and a software engineer at Sematext Group, Inc., where he concentrates on open source technologies, such as Apache Lucene, Solr, Elasticsearch, and the Hadoop stack. He has more than 13 years of experience in various software branches―from banking software to e-commerce products. He is mainly focused on Java but is open to every tool and programming language that will make the achievement of his goal easier and faster. Rafal is also one of the founders of the solr.pl website, where he tries to share his knowledge and help people with their problems related to Solr and Lucene. He is also a speaker at various conferences around the world, such as Lucene Eurocon, Berlin Buzzwords, ApacheCon, Lucene Revolution, and DevOps Days. He began his journey with Lucene in 2002, but it wasn't love at first sight. An indispensable book for professionals who manage and maintain Elasticsearch servers for a living

First off, a disclaimer for newbies: This book is meant for intermediate users of the Elasticsearch Server. Still, the book begins with a short but comprehensive introduction to the basic concepts used in document indexing, the various node types in Elasticsearch and the Apache Lucene library that powers Elasticsearch under the hood. The examples in the book are based on the premise that the user is running an online bookstore which is a powerful way to explore the possibilities offered by Elasticsearch. The examples are in JSON document format which should be familiar to any serious developer. The score of a query determines how well the document matches the input query. The scoring formula is explained using a
simple example to demonstrate how it works in practice. Query rewrite methods, filters and types of queries are explained in detail with a special focus on their performance impact. Simple use cases let the readers know when to use which query group. A new sandboxed scripting language called Groovy is introduced that enables on-the-fly calculation of document scores without compromising the security of the search server. Lucene expressions are also given a brief touch. Readers will enjoy the chapter on improving search suggestions which can make a real difference in the search experience of users. Plenty of examples in this chapter help to take the guesswork out of improving query relevance. Filtering garbage results and using term faceting to narrow down search results are discussed to give readers the power to tailor their websites according to their needs for maximum user satisfaction. Scaling to accommodate increasing demands requires the right amount of shards and replicas. Deciding this amount is explored with a practical routing example. Very useful book for ElasticSearch users

I've been using ElasticSearch professionally for over 6 months - our first version product using ElasticSearch has shipped this week!

Whilst it is fairly easy to get started with ElasticSearch, there are a lot of fundamental aspects to it (and its underpinnings) which can have a dramatic affect on using it. And, whilst there are some good examples, they tend to be fairly simplistic.

Up until I got this book I'd been (extensively!!) relying on Google. And whilst I've eventually managed to work out the answers, it took a lot of searching and therefore a lot longer than I'd have ideally liked. In addition, finding individual snippets on the web doesn't help with some of the broad knowledge.

I found this book to be an excellent guide to help me understand the underpinnings of ElasticSearch, and also helped me to make many improvements in my Google-aquired knowledge. I would recommend it to anyone how is spending any amount of time with ElasticSearch.

it is like standing on the shoulders of a giant

It is hard to underestimate the importance of the search nowadays. It probably even occurs without being noticed, but try to count how many times a day you tried to search for a product online, search through an online catalogue, an abbreviation or simply a weather forecast? Even a simple one page document or a webpage offers search capabilities (Ctrl-F). But have you ever wondered about how fast the search through Wiki is or how exact it is, even correcting your misspellings?

These and more elaborate searches are a product of very powerful software. Typically thanks the Lucene index, it is like standing on the shoulders of a giant, Solr and Elasticsearch are capable of scouting through a sea of documents and terms in milliseconds, boosting the most relevant results to the top helping human or robot deliver business insight, guide through darkness of overwhelming amounts of information to the decision or helping buy the correct product.

It becomes very obvious that these products encapsulate tons of advanced features and boast an array of capabilities, but sifting through the myriad of the features may at times become exhausting, and sure time consuming.

This is where the excellent technical literature as Mastering Elasticsearch 2nd Edition makes a lot of sense. Please note, this is the 2nd edition in a very short period of time (less than two years). What it means, there are two things. First, the book is very popular so the authors get a lot of support and demand for a sequel, second, the technology is evolving fast (~ 100 pages added). All these are good news and a confirmation that Elasticsearch is a mature yet promising technology that is here to stay. It will not be needless to state that this book is seen by the authors as a companion book to the Elasticsearch Server 2nd Edition that I did not read, but the authors stress out that it is a good idea to start from one.

The Mastering Elasticsearch book does feel like aiming at the search engineers, or those who already is involved in conceiving or using a product that will utilize the search capabilities of Elasticsearch. It is full of practical advice, insight and examples that are ranging from fine-tuning the searches to setting and properly configuring the cluster up. There is a chapter toward the end about how to crate plugins to any software project.

I liked the following parts in the book: boosting search scores, using Groovy as a scripting language, troubleshooting and speeding up performance.

Some knowledge of Java is assumed, but no special tooling or software is necessary to go through the book. But please be aware that you will type a lot of text, JSON specifically, so you may want an editor that has good support for JSON especially color highlighting e.g. the Eclipse JSON plugin. Groovy was used very lightly and all the examples were very eloquent.

On the missing thing part, I did not see any examples on how to execute geospatial searched event though it was mentioned that these are possible, and I was highly interested in it.

It does not reduce my score even a bit though, this is an example of a very hard work on the part of the authors and publisher, five our of five.

I was surprised to find my personality there and that is very cool because it all makes sense

I am not a person who is reading personality horoscopes in bulk, predictions, match making and etc. Though I have read “Secret of the Serpent Bloodline” and I decided to buy this book too, just out of curiosity. There is a lot of sense in it. I was surprised to find my personality there and that is very cool because it all makes sense, actually you can see why you have problems with other people and get along well with the others (it is very clear how to alter the situation), or why you like or dislike different food. You can find your personality by your blood type but also others personalities. As I know most of my friend's and family blood type now it is easy not only to understand their personalities but also to predict their attitude. It is amazing and useful. Best known for its full-size scores, Dover offers a new line that should cheer the impoverished student and anyone else who appreciates a bargain. The company has now moved into the miniature-scores market. Mini scores are ideal study guides, sized right to fit into a pocket or handbag, and easy to pull out and follow along with at concerts. The new line from Dover (featuring a nice wide-bottom margin for note taking) carries a much lower retail price than the competition's.

The Dover score of Mahler's "Symphony No. 5 in C-sharp Minor" is a reprint of one originally published in 1904 by C.F. Peters of Leipzig. They've spruced it up with the addition of a helpful four-page glossary of German musical terms with their English equivalents. Unlike the three symphonies that immediately preceded it, "Symphony No. 5 in C-sharp Minor" is not programmatic in nature, nor does it make use of singers. Mahler composed it during his engagement and early years of marriage to Alma Schindler. good, useful, durable edition - if not as crisply printed as it might have been.

I bought this score because the Chicago Symphony is coming to town at the end of October 2015 and will play this symphony as well as Mahler’s first. My twelve year old granddaughter has never been to a professional symphony concert before, so I wanted to take her and provide her with this experience. But before we go and she is overwhelmed, I want to gently help her become familiar with what she can expect, what she will hear, and what is going on during such a concert.

Most people seem to not realize that Beethoven, Mahler, and any other serious art music composer wrote every note that the musicians will be playing. There are a few exceptions (orchestral transcriptions, for example), but in a work such as this, it is all written out. Some suppose that this limits the musicians in ways that other types of improvisatory styles do not. Yes and no. The score is says a lot, but there is a lot about the music it does not say and conductors and orchestras make the works sound quite differently depending on their musical goals and choices. Some we love, others we accept, while others we reject. And that is quite fine. Of course, we as audiences are making choices, then aren’t we?

I like this smaller format for student work over the large format that dover provided decades back. It is handy and can be easily brought to class. The small print is probably easy for younger eyes than mine. For me, for example, the half-note quarter-note rhythm of the second movement is harder to see than to interpret. That is, since I know it is � time, I know it has to be a half note and quarter note even though my eyes tend to want to see them both as quarter notes. The fault is in my older eyes, not the printing. If I get out my reading magnifier, it is fine. Or if I read it in a brighter light. I do not want to give the impression that the score is printed poorly or is too small of a format. No. It is just fine. I just want to alert others whose vision may not be crystal sharp that they might need to make some adjustments in how they read the score. I do think that some of the 16th notes and 32nd notes have the bars too blurry, but again, I know what they are by the number of note in the bar.

It is bound together well and should stand up to some serious use. But it is a glued rather than sewn binding. But that is why it is so inexpensive. The paper is nice and bright and white, so that helps the reading.

A good price for a useful, if not perfect, edition.

I love the dover study scores! I am a lifetime student of composition and orchestration - I always enjoy the small format that I can carry to concerts and follow along! My one continuous gripe is the lack of measure numbers - this is annoying during study.

Practical and Comprehensive

The Prepper's Long-Term Survival Guide by Jim Cobb is an excellent overview of the skills and supplies you need for long-term survival. This is not a book on 72-hour kits or fundamental skills such as fire-making, though both of these topics do get some attention. This book, as the title suggests, focuses on long-term survival and self-sufficiency. Some of the topics include water procurement and purification, food -- hunting, foraging and trapping as well as tried and true methods of food preservation and storage (includes food recommendations), first aid and medicines (both natural and synthetic) that you need to have, hygiene, clothing and shelter, security (including how to harden your home or retreat), tools for maintenance as well as gardening, forms of communication, entertainment in a survival situation, bartering (what and how), and community survival (including quarantine and dealing with refugees). Several important checklists are included to help you analyze your own preparedness, and the suggestions are both practical and budget-friendly. There are also gear recommendations and plenty of resources, books and websites that you can utilize to assist you in becoming more prepared and self-reliant. Horrible Book, nothing long term about it!

After reading Jim Cobbs book : Prepper's Home Defense: Security Strategies to Protect Your Family by Any Means Necessary, which I found to be pretty good I decided to order this new one.

The best example I can gave as how the book isn't about long term survival is the chapter on Food.

Cobb states that: " But the thought of trying to stockpile enough food to even feed just one person for a year or more, let alone an entire family, is just not feasible nor practical for most folks.

Even if you could afford the expense, where would you keep it all?"

So, I guess the Mormons don't have a clue what they are doing when it comes to food storage? How about that Survivalists, which I have been from the 80s, considered a years supply as the minimum for food storage?

You could buy a years supply from many on-line vendors ( you would really need two years for a realistic one year) and take up about a closets worth of space. Surely that is feasible ? And how is having a years worth of food NOT practical? For long term survival?

Cost wise? Matters how you set up your food storage, it could cost as low as a new 48 flat screen or as much as a vacation. Guess it matters what you truly deem as important.

The author suggestion of three months of food only will get most people killed. I mean we are talking LONG TERM SURVIVAL, are we not? Not short term weather preppers. Most winter seasons are longer than three months, let alone the time needed to grow new crops.

Then he says that long grain rice will go rancid from the oils.

What?

Not brown rice, just long grain rice. You know, the kind that all LTS dealers sell and will last 15-25yrs.

He also says to stay away from lard and shortening because vegetable oils have a longer shelf life.

I guess he doesn't know that vegetable oils are almost rancid when you buy them and that's why they can go bad in such a short time. Lard and Coconut oil are the ones that last the longest, then shortening, and then olive oil.

The raising and growing food part is all of seven paragraphs long.

Most of the rest of the book is the same, a paragraph or two on most subjects.

This book is not worth your time or money.

And I got a refund.

Great info for preppers and those new to prepping alike

This book contained quite a bit of useful information, tidbits, and great role scenarios to consider when prepping. While written in an easy to follow format that follows journal entries and then applies them to real world situations. While some reviewers have said that this book is not complete, I do not feel that any book on prepping can be complete, or even SHOULD be, for that matter. Preppers and prepping presupposes the idea that there will always be unforeseen circumstances as well as more information to acquire and skill sets to learn, since it is about ultimate survival situations, after all.

This book takes a lot of the ordinary and turns it into a way to view prepping and survival that some people seem to gloss over or ignore. Not all preppers are like the ones you see on reality TV shows, and not all prepping is easily accomplished by ordinary people in that context, either. Therefore, this book takes into account that an average person may or may not have some of the latest and greatest items or monetary ability in hand in order to prep for survival like those we see on the reality shows, and makes it more within reach and takes a more realistic approach to how we should rationally prep as well as how we should do so in a way that will give us the best odds at survival.

Some of the best ideas presented are the ones that make us consider our skill sets in the event of collapse and WROL. Which skills will help us to barter with others the best, and which ones will be in most demand? Those are the ideas that will ultimately help to determine if we survive alone or if we can interact and barter with others.

While some of the things in this book may be unnecessary according to some reviewers, I feel that it has covered a wide range of topics in a concise and straightforward way, so that anyone can pick it up and see things from a perspective that perhaps they didn't previously consider, and then take that perspective and formulate a survival strategy to fit their lifestyle, and not some restricted method that only a few can follow, thereby making this book well-rounded and very informative for a much larger crowd of people, which in the end makes it even more valuable of a resource to those interested in survival.

Enchanting romance sure to sweep you off your feet

Cleverly written. Author displays witty humor and enchanting romance novels. I look forward to the next book sure to keep me up all night but definitely worth it. Especially favored book one in this series but find that this should have been book 1 so if you haven't book 1 read this one first. No spoiler alert. Believe the author just backtracked and decided to indulge us with the tail of how this couple came to be. If the author is reading this I would love to find out what happens to Anna and also if Jack comes back and stirs up any trouble or perhaps this beast can be tamed by a certain maiden???

I love pretty much all dragon stories and this one delivered! I loved the premise and just the thought of seeing dragons flying in the sky would be cool. The conflict in the story kept my interest and I could not wait to see the outcome. I enjoyed the writing style and the descriptions. Can't wait for the next book.

Personalities that create, manage, and destroy businesses.

Excellent summary of identifying, working with, and maneuvering around the types of executives that inhabit today's corporate environment. With valid parallels drawn to both business and world history, this book helps the reader place themselves and those with whom they work into personality types, that eventually create a corporate personality. More importantly, the book outlines the progression/regression characteristics and tools for moving from one personality type to another (either personally, or as a business), or enhancing one type with characteristics from another.
Well worth reading for anyone in middle management, and required understanding for top executives.

Barbarians to Bureaucrats Corporate Life Cycle Strategies

Excellent book. With so many "here's what's wrong with your company" books available, this is one of the best. Not only does the author suggest what's wrong...i.e., which part of the life cycle is your company in, he tells you how to do something about it.
If I'd only been able to read just one book, I am glad I choose this one.

Help in understanding declining organizations

By comparing the lifecycles of corporations to those of civilizations, this book helps to explain how all sorts of organizations, not just corporations, can become "sick" through bureaucracy and poor leadership. This book helped me to understand why there is so much institutional opposition to correcting even localized corruption and dissolution in a large, bureaucratic GOVERNMENT institution. It helped save my sanity. I with the author would write a similar book dealing with governmental organizations.
Another book which may help if you are trying to "fight city hall" is Stanley Milgram's Obedience to Authority.
