International Law and International Relations: Synthesizing Insights from Interdisciplinary Scholarship brings together the most influential contemporary writers in the fields of international law and international relations to take stock of what we know about the making, interpretation, and enforcement of international law. The contributions to this volume critically explore what recent interdisciplinary work reveals about the design and workings of international institutions, the various roles played by international and domestic courts, and the factors that enhance compliance with international law. The volume also explores how interdisciplinary work has advanced theoretical understandings of the causes and consequences of the increased legalization of international affairs.

Review
"In this volume a top roster of scholars plunges into the crucial debate about how international law connects with politics, both domestic and international. These chapters are crisp presentations of existing debates and advance new perspectives as well. From theory to empirical applications, no recent single volume does a better job of bringing the reader to the cutting edge of knowledge at the intersection of law and the social sciences. An informative read for scholars and students alike."
Beth Simmons, Clarence Dillon Professor of International Affairs and Director of the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs, Harvard University

"The most important academic development in the study of international relations in the last two decades is the fusion of perspectives and frameworks from international legal scholarship and political science international relations scholarship. This book provides state-of-the-art critical analyses of this development from leaders in both fields, and is indispensable for all students of international relations."
Jack Goldsmith, Henry L. Shattuck Professor of Law, Harvard Law School

"This book's subtitle is apt: The State of the Art. Dunoff and Pollack have assembled the leading writers in the field of international law and international relations and provided an invaluable and timely discussion of where we are, where we have been, and where we need to go next. The volume brilliantly weaves together a look back at the almost twenty-five years since Abbott's seminal call for a rapprochement between international law and international relations and a look forward the most interesting and important questions in the field. Where once there were two fields of endeavor there is now a distinct interdisciplinary field and this volume offers a master class in the no-longer-so-new IL/IR."
Andrew Guzman, Berkeley Law School

"This is a striking book. It gathers an impressive collection of leading scholars on a topic of great importance: the connections between international law and international politics. The essays are original and bold. They cover the wide range of legal and political issues at the forefront of both scholarship and practice today. Together, the essays argue that neither the international legal realm nor international politics should be understood in isolation from each other. The volume is broad, deep, and clear. It will be essential reading for scholars of international relations and international law."
Ian Hurd, Northwestern University

"Interdisciplinary Perspectives on International Law and International Relations is an impressive volume that brings together the leading writers in the fields of international law and international relations to celebrate this development, while also critically assessing the conceptual and empirical contributions of IL/IR to the understanding of international law ... Professors Jeffrey Dunoff and Mark Pollack's anthology proves to be a tremendously valuable contribution to the study of international relations - one that traces the trajectory of IL/IR as a discipline over the past century, provides a comprehensive depiction and analysis of the field as it exists today through the varied analyses of the volume's authors, and proposes a way forward for the continued development of cross-disciplinary IL/IR scholarship."
Harvard Law Review

"The present collection brings together the leading scholars writing at the crossroads between the two disciplines to consider and reflect on the current state of interdisciplinary international law and international relations scholarship. The result is a book of high calibre that is not only essential, but also very delightful and enriching reading for scholars and students of international law and international relations."
Monika Zalnieriute, European Journal of International Law

"This book is firmly situated at the heart of very important and dynamic debates, and it will certainly help to shape those debates for a coming generation of scholars: what does the international legal system do to international politics, and what does international politics do to the international legal system? These are the key questions."
International and Comparative Law Quarterly

"Magisterial ... The strength of this edited book is the sheer breadth of the coverage and the diversity of the authors ... A work like Interdisciplinary Perspectives on International Law and International Relations offers a valuable opportunity to take stock of what has been learned."
Emilie Hafner-Burton and David Victor, American Journal of International Law
