Pharsalus 48 BC: Caesar and Pompey - Clash of the Titans (Campaign), by Si Sheppard, Adam Hook

Increasing tension between Julius Caesar and Pompeius Magnus (Pompey the Great) after the death of Marcus Licinius Crassus soon degenerated into military conflict. With his hand considerably strengthened by his election as Dictator by the Senate in Rome, Caesar knew that power would only be a reality once he had militarily defeated Pompey. By August 49BC, Caesar had effectively destroyed Pompey's armies in Spain, but, by the time he had crossed the Adriatic pursuing him eastward, his forces were heavily outnumbered. Even with the reinforcements brought by Mark Antony, his attempt to crush Pompey by laying siege to Dyrrachium was unsuccessful and he eventually had to withdrew into Thessaly, with Pompey in pursuit.

The stage was set for the final clash of the two titans of the Roman world and the odds were heavily in Pompey's favour, with 45,000 men against Caesar's 22,000. However, the veteran legions loyal to Caesar were the best in the Roman army and the challenge he faced clearly stimulated Caesar's tactical genius for battle. Guessing that Pompey would attempt to overwhelm his right wing with his cavalry, he concealed elite cohorts of legionnaries behind his own heavily outnumbered horsemen with orders to fight at close quarters like pikemen. Caesar's predictions were correct and, far from overwhelming his exposed right flank, Pompey's left flank was routed, allowing Caesar to envelop and scatter the rest of his army.

Simon Sheppard expertly charts the events leading up to the Pharsalus campaign, the course of the battle itself and the seismic implications of this decisive clash between the two greatest generals of their age.

Exciting Look at a Key Moment in History
By R. A Forczyk
The great civil war between Pompey and Caesar still makes for interesting reading even two millennia later. In Pharsalus 48 BC, Osprey Campaign #174, author Si Sheppard presents a well-researched and insightful look at the campaign that decided the war in Caesar's favor. While the author's preference is to focus heavily on the political aspects of this struggle, military aspects of the campaign are thoroughly addressed. Pharsalus 48 BC is an exciting and erudite look at one of the key moments in history that helped to shape the Roman World and ultimately, our own.

The author begins this volume with a rather lengthy 10-page introduction that discusses the political strife and competitions in the late Roman Republic that were the basic causes of the Great Civil War between the factions of Pompey and Caesar. Although this introduction is informative and well-written, much of this material was covered in the Essential Histories volume #42 on the Civil War and is a bit too redundant for a campaign volume that is designed to focus more on the military aspects. The section on opposing commanders, 8 pages, is quite detailed and discusses not only Caesar and Pompey but provides capsule biographies on their key subordinates. On the other hand, the section on `Legions of the Late Republic' is a bit skimpy at 3 pages and rather over-generalized. This would have been the section to discuss order of battle (at least what is known) as well as cavalry tactics, which are often slighted in favor of talking about infantry tactics, but this section is rather more a discussion of the Marian-style army. There is no specific section on opposing plans in this volume, but that information is woven into the campaign narrative.

Pharsalus 48 BC includes five 2-D Maps (Caesar's five campaigns in the Mediterranean; Balkans theater of operations, January-April 48 BC; Battle of Dyrrachium, 10 July 48 BC; Balkans theater of operations, July-August 48 BC; Battle of Thapsus, 6 February 46 BC), three 3-D maps (Pharsalus: early morning, mid-morning, noon) and three battle scenes by Adam Hook (the collapse of Caesar's counterattack at Dyrrachium, 9 July 48 BC; the front line at Pharsalus; Caesar's reserves rout Pompey's cavalry). The author provides an excellent two-page bibliography that includes both scholarly and standard references.

The campaign narrative itself provides 21 pages on events leading up to the Battle of Pharsalus, 29 pages on the actual battle and about 9 on the aftermath. Overall, the author's battle narrative is well-written and coherent; he knows how to make the best use of ancient literary sources as well as modern archaeological studies to produce a smooth synthesis that makes military sense, unlike some authors who reduce the study of ancient military history to bickering with other scholars about various obscure and eclectic minutiae. I also found a certain level of political sarcasm interwoven into the text that made the characters seem more human hence, more interesting. Although the author does not always specify where he has crossed from fact to assumption in his narrative, this volume is certainly a cut well above most of Osprey's other ancient or medieval titles.

Pharsalus 48 BC: The end of the Roman Republic
By D. C. Stolk
The Osprey title Pharsalus 48 BC, about the decisive battle fought between the 'Titans' of Roman history Ceasar and Pompey the Great, is a compact overview of this battle that ended the Roman Republic and paved the way for 'Ceasars' to start ruling the Roman empire in later years, and the campaign that led up to it from the start of the Civil War (Caesar's famous crossing of the Rubicon). It includes some great full color battle scenes by Adam Hook and general information about how this Civil War came to be, the opposing commanders and how the legions of the late republic were formed and equipped.

But while a good general history of the battle of Pharsalus, several annoying mistakes prevent this book from getting more than three stars.

Let's start off with a minor quibble, but on page 16, he uses the famous Latin quote Caesar is supposed to have used before he crossed the Rubicon: "Alea jaecta est" and translates it as: "let the die be cast" but this means "the die is cast" (while "Jacta alea esto" means "let the die be cast"). While the alternate version is that he used the Greek quote "aneristho kubos" or "let the die be thrown". Minor mistake, I agree, but other Latin sentences/quotes are given the same lackadaisical treatment, so therefore I point it out as an example.

Then, on page 33, he states about the speed of action of Caesar: "If Caesar's blitzkrieg was a natural extension of his tactics in Gaul his attitude in victory was entirely uncharacteristic". But if you do any reading about Caesar's Gallic Wars, you will find that he uses the same 'clementia' against the Celts: yes, he could be utterly ruthless and massacre an entire village that kept resisting, but more often than not he used the same 'forgive and forget' tactic against the Celtic tribes that rose up against him, even those that did this several times, so this wasn't 'uncharacteristic' at all. Also, his 'clementia' was an important part of his propaganda campaign (Pompey had the nickname 'the young butcher' early in his career); so if Caesar's legions had slaughtered their way through Italy, this would have turned the population against him.

Then on page 37, Sheppard states, after a mutiny had broken out, that: "Caesar had to resort to disbanding the veteran IX legion, ignoring the appeals of his men to reinstate it until after decimating the ringleaders". This is incorrect. Caesar announced to the men that he intended to decimate the IX Legion, and dishonorably discharge the rest from the army. When the soldiers begged for mercy, he relented, saying that only 120 ringleaders needed to draw lots to choose 12 men to be executed. So he never disbanded the legion. After this, the Ninth would fight with great distinction in the forthcoming campaign.

On page 68, Sheppard states: "The capacity for cavalry to punch through heavy infantry in such a scenario would require the invention of the stirrup". The fable of the need for a stirrup for cavalry to be able to punch through a mass of infantry has since long proven false. If the infantry keeps up a strong enough 'wall', no horse will crash into it; nor does the cavalry need a stirrup just to keep a firm seat, if they charge at the enemy (as many cavalry 'charges' before the invention of the stirrup have shown, and the right kind of saddle will do the same).
These are a couple of examples of incorrect information presented in this title; hence the three stars.

Also, as mentioned by other reviewers, but of course not the fault of the author: the 3-D battle maps are not very good and show little detail, which is made worse by the crease of the binder (Osprey, do something about this! This is a problem in other titles, but particularly annoying in this one!).

So, in general, a reasonable account of the battle of Pharsalus that's worth reading for people interested this particular part of Roman history. But be careful about some of the 'facts' that are presented in it.
For a more in-depth coverage of this period, including the battle of Pharsalus, I would recommend "Ceasar: Life of a colossus" by Adrian Goldsworthy (a biography about Ceasar), "In the name of Rome" by Adrian Goldworthy, which is a look at Rome's greatest 'generals' and at how and why they won their victories ('generals' covered include Ceasar and Pompey) and "Ceasar against Rome" by Ramon L. Jimenez (covers the four-year Roman Civil War that began with Ceasar's crossing of the Rubicon in 49 BCE).

Roman vs. Roman
By Phil Historian
The Civil War in Rome between Julius Caesar and Pompey the Great after Marcus Licinius Crassus was killed fighting the Parthians at Carrhae in 53 BC ( I am planning on writing a review of a book I bought on that for Christmas) is still a interesting event of military history to study today over two thousand years later. one of the largest battles occurred in August 48 BC in Greece at Pharsalus, a major victory for Caesar. Si Sheppard has done a very good account of this major battle of the Roman Civil War.

A Very Poor Reproduction of a Wonderful Book
By Herb Anderson
I sincerely regret purchasing this particular version of this title. I had previously downloaded the free PDF file of this title from Project Gutenberg and printed a copy on my office laser printer. It is far superior to this version. The drawings are such low resolution and fuzzy in this version as to be almost useless. I should have been tipped off by the ballpoint pen cover illustration someone thought to stick on this vintage text about pen and ink drawing. This is a wonderful title for anyone who cares about style and art in pen and ink drawing. But save yourself the disappointment and cost of buying this version. Download the free PDF and print it on any old inkjet printer. You'll have a much higher quality product.

Heroes and Heroines: Tlingit Haida Legend, by Mary Giraudo Beck

Over uncounted generations the Tlingits and Haidas of Southeast Alaska developed a spoken literature as robust and distinctive as their unique graphic art style, and passed it from the old to the young to ensure the continuity of their culture. Even today when the people gather, now under lamplight rather than the flickering glow from the central fire pit, the ancient myths and legends are told and retold, and they still reinforce the unity of the lineage, and clan and the culture. Mary Beck has selected nine of the ancient myths and legends from the oral literature that are authentic for one group or another from this region.

Review
”Another excellent book is Mary Beck’s Heroes & Heroines in Tlingit-Haida Legend. Beck tells some of the classic stories very well in a book that is also worthy of recognition for its attractive design.” ---Alaska magazine

“Mary Beck opens this collection of legends by setting the tradition scene: ‘…It will be a time of feasting, singing, and dancing, of honoring lineages and of telling ancestral stories.’ In this small, beautifully produced volume, enhanced by the wonderful illustrations by Nancy DeWitt, Becks tells nine traditional tales, including Fog Woman, Volcano Woman, Bear Mother and The Boy Who Fed Eagles.” ---Bill Hunt, Anchorage Daily News

Can't Say enough about this book
By J. E. Nelson
Just like Beck's "Shamans & Kushtakas" this book is a great reference on Tlingit & Haida mythology. She does an excellent job in both books passing on the legends of old into the 21st century. I am a Haida indian and I think she did a wonderful job

A wonderful selection of tales from Tlingit-Haida culture.
By Monika
Having grown up in Alaska, I've had much exposure to Native Alaskan culture and have always loved reading or hearing their folklore. This particular book is a great collection of Tlingit-Haida legends, each of which is a sort of "how things came to be this way" story. They explain why a certain clan took a particular crest, or how a legendary hero came to fame, etc. What I found especially interesting is the comparison with folklore from other cultures. Each story is accompanied by a short introduction in which the author shows us the parallels between these tales and similar ones in Greek, Roman, and Egyptian mythology. The stories are set down in clear, simple language, but are still vivid and engrossing. My one criticism of the book would be that it's too short. There are only nine legends included, and this makes for only a small sampling of Tlingit-Haida lore. I would have loved to see more. However, I will not knock any point off my rating for this. The fact that I wish it had gone on longer only attests to its overall quality. This is a terrific book, easy to read, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone interested in native folklore.

Great collection of stories!
By kristian Hoffland
This is a great collection of Tribal stories form Southern Alaska/ BC coastal area. My wife & I read them on a 2 week trip through the inside passage and they are great! The only downside is the forwards/introductions before each story. They help you understand the context of the stories, which is great, but give away the ending of the story, which makes reading them a bit of a double edged sword. we started reading the introductions after the story, then re-reading the story again to better understand them. Well worth reading to understand not only the indigenous peoples better, but the whole ecosystem of this area as well and how people soo connected to the land, air, & sea value life, honor, intelligence, human nature in general, & the idea of legacy.

Outliers: The Story of Success, by Malcolm Gladwell

There is a story that is usually told about extremely successful people, a story that focuses on intelligence and ambition. Gladwell argues that the true story of success is very different, and that if we want to understand how some people thrive, we should spend more time looking around them-at such things as their family, their birthplace, or even their birth date. And in revealing that hidden logic, Gladwell presents a fascinating and provocative blueprint for making the most of human potential.

In The Tipping Point Gladwell changed the way we understand the world. In Blink he changed the way we think about thinking. In OUTLIERS he transforms the way we understand success.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best of the Month, November 2008: Now that he's gotten us talking about the viral life of ideas and the power of gut reactions, Malcolm Gladwell poses a more provocative question in Outliers: why do some people succeed, living remarkably productive and impactful lives, while so many more never reach their potential? Challenging our cherished belief of the "self-made man," he makes the democratic assertion that superstars don't arise out of nowhere, propelled by genius and talent: "they are invariably the beneficiaries of hidden advantages and extraordinary opportunities and cultural legacies that allow them to learn and work hard and make sense of the world in ways others cannot." Examining the lives of outliers from Mozart to Bill Gates, he builds a convincing case for how successful people rise on a tide of advantages, "some deserved, some not, some earned, some just plain lucky."

Outliers can be enjoyed for its bits of trivia, like why most pro hockey players were born in January, how many hours of practice it takes to master a skill, why the descendents of Jewish immigrant garment workers became the most powerful lawyers in New York, how a pilots' culture impacts their crash record, how a centuries-old culture of rice farming helps Asian kids master math. But there's more to it than that. Throughout all of these examples--and in more that delve into the social benefits of lighter skin color, and the reasons for school achievement gaps--Gladwell invites conversations about the complex ways privilege manifests in our culture. He leaves us pondering the gifts of our own history, and how the world could benefit if more of our kids were granted the opportunities to fulfill their remarkable potential. --Mari Malcolm

From Publishers Weekly
SignatureReviewed by Leslie ChangIn Outliers, Gladwell (The Tipping Point) once again proves masterful in a genre he essentially pioneered—the book that illuminates secret patterns behind everyday phenomena. His gift for spotting an intriguing mystery, luring the reader in, then gradually revealing his lessons in lucid prose, is on vivid display. Outliers begins with a provocative look at why certain five-year-old boys enjoy an advantage in ice hockey, and how these advantages accumulate over time. We learn what Bill Gates, the Beatles and Mozart had in common: along with talent and ambition, each enjoyed an unusual opportunity to intensively cultivate a skill that allowed them to rise above their peers. A detailed investigation of the unique culture and skills of Eastern European Jewish immigrants persuasively explains their rise in 20th-century New York, first in the garment trade and then in the legal profession. Through case studies ranging from Canadian junior hockey champions to the robber barons of the Gilded Age, from Asian math whizzes to software entrepreneurs to the rise of his own family in Jamaica, Gladwell tears down the myth of individual merit to explore how culture, circumstance, timing, birth and luck account for success—and how historical legacies can hold others back despite ample individual gifts. Even as we know how many of these stories end, Gladwell restores the suspense and serendipity to these narratives that make them fresh and surprising. One hazard of this genre is glibness. In seeking to understand why Asian children score higher on math tests, Gladwell explores the persistence and painstaking labor required to cultivate rice as it has been done in East Asia for thousands of years; though fascinating in its details, the study does not prove that a rice-growing heritage explains math prowess, as Gladwell asserts. Another pitfall is the urge to state the obvious: No one, Gladwell concludes in a chapter comparing a high-IQ failure named Chris Langan with the brilliantly successful J. Robert Oppenheimer, not rock stars, not professional athletes, not software billionaires and not even geniuses—ever makes it alone. But who in this day and age believes that a high intelligence quotient in itself promises success? In structuring his book against that assumption, Gladwell has set up a decidedly flimsy straw man. In the end it is the seemingly airtight nature of Gladwell's arguments that works against him. His conclusions are built almost exclusively on the findings of others—sociologists, psychologists, economists, historians—yet he rarely delves into the methodology behind those studies. And he is free to cherry-pick those cases that best illustrate his points; one is always left wondering about the data he evaluated and rejected because it did not support his argument, or perhaps contradicted it altogether. Real life is seldom as neat as it appears in a Malcolm Gladwell book. (Nov.)Leslie T. Chang is the author of Factory Girls: From Village to City in a Changing China (Spiegel & Grau).

From Bookmarks Magazine
What explains whether or not Outliers succeeded with a given reviewer? Sometimes, Gladwell's trademark style and wit were sufficient. Many critics noted some anecdotes that did not quite seem coherent, but they commended the book anyway because Gladwell is so entertaining and enthusiastic. Yet Gladwell's talent alone was insufficient to earn reviewers' highest marks. (Indeed, several who focused on this aspect of the book were annoyed that the author seemed to be merely offering common sense with a New Yorker sheen.) The reviewers with whom Gladwell truly succeeded were those who noticed the moral message of his book: if the factors that determine greatness are so much more complicated than individual efforts, our society should provide a nurturing environment where serendipitous coincidences abound and every person has a real chance to succeed.Copyright 2008 Bookmarks Publishing LLC

Overall I enjoyed reading Outliers and I would definitely recommend it to ...
By Olivia Filicetti
Have you ever wondered why some people prevail and live remarkably successful lives while others fail to reach their full potential?
Malcolm Gladwell explores the different factors that decide the difference between successful and unsuccessful people. We learn what rock stars, geniuses and computer programmers have in common. He explains that success is not just a matter of IQ, but a combination of hard work and opportunity. In Outliers, Gladwell hooks the reader by first providing an anecdote and explaining the common misconceptions that people have about that situation and then completely turns our understanding of how they got to be successful on its head.

This book includes stories of why January first is the ideal birthday for a hockey player, how the work ethic determined by Jewish immigrants making clothes lead to them becoming successful lawyers, how Asians working in rice paddies has developed a culture which excels at math, and how performing for 10,000 hours in Hamburg decided the Beatles’ rise to fame. While this book was enjoyable for this trivia alone, Gladwell manages to change our perception of success entirely, because timing, circumstance, and even luck are major factors that decide a person’s success. Sometimes the disadvantaged actually have all the advantages in the world just because they happened to be born in the right place at the right time. We have to examine all the factors surrounding a successful individual which all had to come together in order for him or her to be an outlier.

Gladwell bases most of his anecdotes and explanations on research conducted by others and I wish he would have gone into more detail about how these studies were conducted and how reliable they actually are but this is the only complaint I have about this book. He is a very charming and enthusiastic story teller, he thoroughly explains his thought process without rambling and kept me interested and engaged throughout the whole book. Overall I enjoyed reading Outliers and I would definitely recommend it to others.

A people pleaser for the masses
By Felix O. Hartmann
I usually love all the books I read since I am very selective. However this was a let down for a number of reasons:
1. While it started off strongly, it rapidly fell off in all aspects about a third in. The writing was less to the point, the points were less groundbreaking, and seemed to be supported by rather anecdotal observations. It had a comeback here and there, but the majority of the book as weak imo.
2. Overdone storytelling. About 1/5th of the book is spent on a chapter on plane crashes. He makes a very smart and interesting point, but that point was made after about 30 minutes, yet he kept going bringing example after example in excruciating detail. This is closely related to point 1 as it appears that as substance decreased, the exposition of description increased.
3. His stance is too extreme. If the tale of the self made man is one extreme, then outliers is the other extreme as it basically attempts to discredit the successful and say it was all due to luck. He keeps mentioning Bill Gates and how "lucky" he was to have a computer in his school. He also mentions that there were only a handful of school at the time to have such a computer. Well a handful of schools say 12? With say 1000 students on average each? That means 12,000 others had the same chance as him. 12,000 that did not program all night long, to learn this new skill, but rather chose to play ball or worry about boys/girls. While we can discredit everyone by the logic of "if X did not happen, he would not have accomplished Y", the truth is this Malcolm: We are around so much opportunity, more so now than ever, that it's less a question of whether there is opportunity, nut whether we take advantage of it. You are correct that now I'd have a harder time creating my own operating system, that ship has sailed, I agree, but that is looking at success with a very narrow lense. There is always an opportune industry for one to break into, and all it takes is seizing those opportunities. As with your mother, you mention in the Epilogue, if it were not for someone having given her money to go to school, things would have been very different. Don't you think that is selling her short? I'm sure she would have kept asking until she found someone else to give her money.
The true story of success is that successful people will not let their story be changed by adding or removing a variable from their path, they will keep fighting and find something to replace that variable. That's why some of the most successful people have been declined or faced defeat (be it investors, agents, etc.) over a hundred times and kept going. If you'd go back and take away their investor, its safe to say they would have kept going to another 100 and eventually found someone else. And that attitude, as you may claim, is not a stone cold result of legacy, as both those born of a privileged background as well as those with the most painful of pasts have those attitudes... because an attitude is decided in the moment, not something we are born with or given.

In conclusion, it is an interesting read if you want to learn more about people, but take it with a grain of salt. This is NOT personal development, or anything of the sort in case you think this is a book I read and learn to be successful... quite contrary the message appears to comfort those that don't have success and blame society, and poke those with success implying that whatever they have was not earned.

Great book
By Joshua Leeger
This book changed the way I look at things. Gladwell breaks success down into a few components:

Meaningfulness - The thing has to have some meaning for you, some deep meaning. You need this to create or have a desire or need to do the thing - you won't do it if there's no need to do it, or no desire.

Expertise - Which is different from "success." It takes 10,000 hours of consistent, deliberate practice to become "expert" at something. If you have the desire/need, you won't mind putting in the time.

Support - No one does anything alone. Every successful person had support from someone at some critical point in time.

History - Your own genealogical history will have a huge impact on what your do - how you act/react regarding things. Your personal history will have a similarly huge impact - how you view the world is based on your experience of it from an early age.

Culture - The culture you were raised in, and the culture you live/work in, will determine your behavior to a large extent, unless you're really aware of it, and can work with it.

Luck - It takes a lot of luck to be "successful." You have to be in the right places at the right times. You have to have all of the cards stacked up in your favor.

There are some things we just can't get around. Our genes, for instance. Our family history. Our past. Those things are done. The good thing is, they are done. We don't have to think about them, unless they create impediments for us. If they do, we need to deal with them and get over/around those issues.

We can't really get around luck, either...though some people feel like we make our own luck (and I tend to agree). We can do our best to stack the cards in our favor, to create Win/Win situations whenever possible, and walk away from situations that are Lose/Win, or Win/Lose. That will go a long way. Maybe as far as luck itself can at times.

The rest of it is simply finding what's most meaningful to us, and being true to it. It takes a lot of work, a lot of bravery, a lot of soul-searching. But when it's all over, wouldn't you rather be able to say you used your life to become who you really are? That you realized your fullest potential? The alternative seems very sad.
